Book Description

0136246028 978-0136246022 June 22, 1998 2

This book presents a clear and philosophically sound method for identifying, interpreting, and evaluating arguments as they appear in non-technical sources. It focuses on a more functional, real-world goal of argument analysis as a tool for figuring out what is reasonable to believe rather than as an instrument of persuasion. Develops a precise, step-by-step method for analyzing arguments about a variety of topics -- shows how to rewrite arguments in a format that makes them clearer and makes their evaluation easier; and then how to evaluate the rewritten argument. Illustrates methods by applying them to both serious and humorous arguments about different topics as they appear in a variety of contexts — e.g., newspaper and magazine editorials and columns, short essays, informal reports of scientific results, etc. Uses simple, relatively non-controversial examples to illustrate the basic ideas and concepts, and then offers more complicated and controversial examples for challenging applications. For anyone interested in identifying, interpreting, and evaluating arguments as they appear in non- technical sources.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Offering a clear and detailed account of reason and argument, this book presents an effective method that is applicable to reasoning about almost any topic. The book facilitates the interpretation and evaluation of reasoning as it occurs in non-technical contexts, such as newspaper editorials and columns, short essays, and informal reports of scientific results. Reason and Argument gives students the capacity to recognize a solid argument from a poor one, the skill to discern what the available evidence supports, the power to understand the world around them, and the ability assess all that they read and hear. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invest in your mind by investing in this book!, January 29, 2002
This review is from: Reason and Argument (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
If you want to develop or improve your skills at identifying and evaluating arguments and reasoning (and you do, don't you?), this is the book for you. Like no other text on critical thinking or informal logic, its clear, simple, precise and no-nonsense approach will help you become a clear and precise thinker. Get a [used & cheap!] copy, study it, master it, and you will soon be able to see through much of the BS that is offered for and against all sorts of views, claims, beliefs, and policies. On the positive side, you will learn what kinds of reasons would be good reasons to support various views and learn to rationally critique and defend your own beliefs and the reasons why you hold them. Invest in your mind by investing in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on basic applied logic, August 9, 2002

This review is from: Reason and Argument (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I've taught applied logic at the university level for over 25 years. Feldman's book is the best text on "informal" logic. If I had my way, every student would be required to work through REASON AND ARGUMENT, either late in high school or early in college.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowledge = power! This book can prove it., April 3, 2002

This review is from: Reason and Argument (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I will not say much about this book because you must read it to understand the content and the significance of this rare book. The older title of this book was called "In pursuit of truth." This book is beautiful in every aspect. 1. Lets you unfold the truth in the world. 2. Provides best exercises to become argumentative and rational person. 3. It gives you logical reference to "What is logic? What is true? What is objective truth?" There are so many wonderful aspects about this book, I can't list them all. I guarantee that when you finish this book, you will be good at anything you do: computer science, logistics, linguistic, literature, philosophy...etc. I will say no more. Beautiful!
