1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new or special
This book is about convincing the moderate believer to become a more extreme believer. If you're looking for rationalizations to support an existing belief, this book is for you. If you're looking for practical evidence to support belief, look elsewhere. This book glosses over the questions of skeptics.

All of this is done in fairly colloquial language which augments the validity and credibility of the book: Christians have good answers for the tough questions and they are able to verbalize them clearly as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Answers to Tough Questions About Christianity, May 11, 2011

This review is from: Reason to Believe: A Response to Common Objections to Christianity (Paperback)
This excellent apologetics and faith building resource was formerly titled "Objections Answered." It is my understanding that eminent theologian, Dr. R.C. Sproul was asked by D. James Kennedy (then pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale) to answer the 10 biggest objections that non-believers had in the late 1970's and early 1980's to the Christian faith. Reason to Believe is the response of Dr Sproul with reference to the objections submitted to him by Dr. Kennedy. Even though we find ourselves with increasing skepticism, and postmodernism in the 21st Century - I still believe this is one of the finest primer's available for Christian's to answer these objections in today's climate.

Here are the ten objections Sproul tackles in this book (according to Evangelism Explosion - these were the 10 most popular objections to the Christian Faith in the early 1980's):

1) "The Bible Contradicts itself. It's Just a Fairy Tale."
2) "All Religions are Good. It doesn't matter what you Believe."
3) "What About the Poor Native Who Never Heard of Christ?"
4) "Christianity is a Crutch for Weak People."
5) "The Church is Full of Hypocrites."
6) "I Don't Need Religion."
7) "There is No God."
8) "If There is a God Why Is There So Much Evil in the World?"
9) "Why Does God Allow Suffering?"
10) "When You're Dead You're Dead! There Is No More!"

Dr. Sproul handles these ten questions by beginning with his own personal testimony of how he came to have a personal relationship with Christ, and then proceeds to handle these objections with great skills in logic, Biblical exegesis, an understanding of popular culture, helpful illustrations, and concludes each chapter with a helpful summary of how to handle each objection. I highly recommend this book as educational, encouraging, and helpful in equipping Christians to share their faith with confidence because we have excellent reasons for why we believe what we do about the Christian faith.

This is a great tool for defending the faith. After reading the arguments,
it takes more blind faith to not believe in God than to believe in Him.
I would reccommend this book to anyone, and I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sproul does a wonderful job of glorifying and defending He who requires no defense, July 28, 2011

This review is from: Reason to Believe: A Response to Common Objections to Christianity (Paperback)
In this book R.C. Sproul addresses many of the more difficult questions with intelligence and passion. This book is designed to enable the reader to answer the cynical questions people have about Christianity. This book is a useful tool for the Christian and the non-Christian.

Sproul accomplishes much with this book. He manages to instruct Christians in areas that some consider dilemmas of their faith while at the same time offering a way for them to disprove objections posed by skeptics. The reader is enabled to refute arguments in simple and effective ways, using verbiage that everyone can understand. Thankfully, the eternal truth is not sacrificed. Sproul does not water down or weaken the Gospel. He does not turn to popular secular answers. He rest on the truths as provided by God in a way that will satisfy the doubter.

Sproul explores some common and some not so common arguments against Christianity: does the Bible contradict itself, aren't all religions the same, what about the unreached, church is for the weak and is full of hypocrites, why does God allow suffering, and much more. The hard questions are addressed fully and in great detail. He charges headlong into controversy and refuses to skirt awkward topics.

This short book is a concise reference tool that can be used for evangelism and to strengthen our own faith. It can be used to prepare the reader to address difficult questions or simply gifted to a skeptic. Sproul does a wonderful job of glorifying and defending He who requires no defense.
