3.0 out of 5 stars Could've been better., September 14, 2005

This review is from: Reason 3: The Complete Course (Paperback)
I'm a first time user of Reason and this book could've went into more depth about certain things. First of all, I'm a Mac user. The author was writing this "complete course" for Windows users. It's kind of annoying since he writes the tutorials for those with right click mouse buttons. Fortunately, I know how to right click on my Mac. The descriptions on the synthesizers and effect units were fairly good, but the tutorials came up way too short. They tell you to do this to one knob, and this to the fader, but it doesn't explain what type of sound you'll be creating. Then it leads you on the next device. I wish that it would've given a better idea of how you can make your synths to sound a certain way. I guess they want you to discover the sounds and experiment yourself, which is a good thing, but sometimes I enjoy a better description of how you can manipulate the sounds. I also felt the writing was rushed, and on some effect devices and synths, the description is a paragraph long. I'm not sure who he was writing this book for, but it wasn't for beginners.

This might be of some to someone who could not print out the manual that ships with Reason. Otherwise, it simply is a lazy rewording of the manual - a functional description of the components.

Whereas the manual might say, "such-and-such a knob does so-and-so" this book says "such-and-such a knob does so-and-so, turn the knob and play a note, see what happens." Well duh.

Part of what makes it come to over 300 pages is its wide margins printed over with a gratuitous graphic of a level indicator. Reminds me of a kid's book report they try to fluff out to make extra pages.

You'd do much better to play around with the turorials that ship with Reason, and visit Propellerhead's website for some real tips, tricks and insights into stuff not covered in this quick and dirty little pamphlet.

I was very disapointed. The Reason manuel is 10 times better.
I went back reading Reason 2.5 power by Michael Prager.Gonna buy his version of 3.0.Should have done it in the first place.
