5.0 out of 5 stars The king returns, April 25, 2001
By "rreichle" (Houston, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
Before hearing "Reason," I would have said that King Django had already done it all. He had already experimented with ska, reggae, dub and dancehall with his bands Skinnerbox, the Stubborn All-Stars and the Version City Rockers, and "Roots and Culture," his first solo album, surprisingly threw traditional Jewish music into the mix. But even with all these styles under his belt, he covers even more new musical territory with "Reason." Drum 'n' bass, jungle, rap, dancehall and classic rock are all thrown together in an amazing display of Django's versatility. Fast tracks like "Reason," "LKO" and "Kick It Out" combine Django's formidable toasting skills with lively rock-reggae backing music. "Never Try" and "I Got A Ride" are traditional reggae songs, although with a totally different feel than any Version City-produced songs. "Chase Pum Pum" and "Hustle the Mac" are sort of hip-hop/jungle songs. And the album even has "Next Season," another installment in the years-old "Open Season-... is closed-Hepcat Season-No Reason for Season-Cooking Season" ska DJ battle.

With the exception of the lively first four tracks, it's a dark album, and different from anything you've ever heard. Whatever your expectations, it's definitely worth the buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical Slap in your Face, August 26, 2002
Cannot get this out of my CD changer for 4 months now. Ska-rock-dancehall. Plus. Eclectic the way I like it - genuine, not a gratuituous stew of styles.
Mostly I like the faster tracks: "Kick it Out" is my favorite. Also, "Reason" & "LKO" (blistering). Mostly I like the songs with guitar textures.
"Never Try" is a beautiful ballad. "I Got a Ride" has the blues roots storyline of Dylan's great Cold Irons Bound.
King is confident & charming & smart with almost no preaching. I know of nothing like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great release., July 25, 2003
This, king Djangos second release is just a little bit below the first realease however is still brilliant, Reason seems to concentrate on the rock reaggae side of the spectrum and precipice is one of his best tracks along with reason thats pretty good aswell but more heavy duty reggae so if your looking for some pre-eminant reggae then pick up any of king djangos releases then if you dont own any Bob Marley already then go get legend or at least i would recommened you do that. King Djangos music is more experimental on the previous more cultural album but this could be seen as a better prelude than roots would so i recommened this highly along with anything else to date by king Django.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album
This is a great album, and it has grown on me over time. KD displays a whole palette of sounds and tempos, from ska, to guitar-laced harder stuff, to reggae. Read more
