3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but the book is too short..., July 29, 1998

This review is from: A Reason for Optimism: Treating Cancer With a Bone Marrow Transplant (Paperback)
I read the 96 page book in about an hour and I'm not a speed reader. The book has lots of white space and a pretty large font for the type.

I did enjoy everything that was written here, but I kept wanting to know more information about how Marilyn Hamm (the patient) was doing at each stage of her treatment. She did a pretty good job of laying out the book and trying to address the most important topics, but I would have liked to seen more of the clinical details of the treatment plan and comlications as they arose; more of Marilyn's feelings (and Jeff, her significant other's feelings); and especially a lot more about what was going on during the recovery period. The book is written to give potential patients and care givers a look into what a BMT is like, but it gave me more questions than answers.

Having said these things, I think the book is very reaffirming and it does give potential patients good reason to hope for the future. I especially liked the section! on Marilyn's thoughts about clinical trials--I've not found anything else that discusses trials from a patient's point of view.
