I've been a homeschooling mom for over 6 years now. After using Concerned Communication's A Reason For Writing since the beginning, we stumble on A Reason For Spelling this year. I was tired of "boring" spelling curriculumns, so figured we'd ...give this a try. Well, we ALL love it (we're using levels A, C and E for our 1st, 3rd and 5th graders). There is a lot of activities packed into these pages, and you can pretty much pick and choose how much of it you want to do. There are reproducibles in the teachers manuals of additional activities. I'm thinking of using it again next year with all the activities, and I should be able to turn it into our full Language Arts program. One word of warning, DON'T try to use this without the teachers manual, you will be LOST! I find the teacher's manual invaluable!

Disappointing.,

This book is recommended for third graders. I was very disappointed when I saw the actual spelling words used. My third grader was spelling the same words in the first grade. If you have a third grader who has a hard time spelling, then maybe this is the book for you. The average third grader should be spelling the word "chill" (lesson 1), "bark" (lesson 25), and boot (lesson 31--from the very last spelling list in the book) already. This is not a third grade level book!!!

This book is necessary if you desire your student to use most of the sections in the correlating Student Workbook including the story read by the teacher at the beginning of the section, dictation, journaling questions (that relate to the story and Holy Bible verse) and a few other activities to reinforce the concepts and make the words memorable to the student. The stories at the being of each unit relate to most of the words used and is a continuing saga throughout the book. Level "C" is 3rd grade. I personally enjoy the stories because they bring home the point of the Bible verse for each section and subsequent stories relate to one another - thus making a "book" out of the entire series. My student also enjoys the stories because they are interesting. The guide is easy to read though it is geared for a "classroom" style, we use it in our homeschool with one student (and simply omit the "game" played with teams). We also employ the "Spelling Power" method by not reviewing words my student already knows after the pretest - only the ones missed. My student also completes each unit (intended for 5 days of study) in 2 or 3 days if the words are too easy. It's easy to set at your student's pace - assigning as much or as little as is necessary. Overall, we enjoy the spelling program.
