Book Description

August 21, 2008
Everyone travels. For some, such as the woman in a remote corner of Afghanistan who may never once venture more than five miles from the village in which she was born, the journey is not far. For others, such as the fourteenth-century Muslim from Morocco named Ibn Battuta, who at the age of twenty-one set off on a thirty-year trek and traveled an estimated seventy-five thousand miles, the journey is far indeed. Wherever you fit along this spectrum, 30 Reasons to Travel is put together with you in mind. The book, based on observations and insights gleaned from the author's extensive experience abroad, offers concrete reasons for traveling to distant lands. But it does so in a way that also has application for the reader who will stay close to home. Through both words and images - more than 275 photographs accompany the text - the book invites the reader to consider how he or she is part of a journey that the world as a whole is already on. It is a journey that includes things such as strangers and trains, laughter and music. It is a journey in which no one person is the center, and in which there is much to explore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully done and worth the money, September 11, 2008
This review is from: 30 Reasons to Travel: Photographs and Reflections from Southeast Asia (Paperback)
I met Joel at a wedding where he was doing photography and was struck by how easily he connected with people and became a part of the event. I think this quality may be what makes his pictures so outstanding. His landscapes are good quality photography and the composition of his photos of objects is interesting and often amusing. However, it's the photos of PEOPLE that are the standout here and what make this book really special. The eyes of the people he photographs are not guarded and cautious. You can tell that he's connected with them in some way, and the result is pictures that will take your breath away in their openness and beauty.

I think this is a fantastic book for anyone who has the slightest bit of curiousity about the world. I work in international education, and would love to see study abroad offices pick this up as a tool to recruit students.

Carillet's photographs are excellent and are beautifully printed in this book. His photographs and text not only point to his love of travel, but also display his love for people... especially in Asia. Anyone who takes the time to absorb this book will come away with some of that love, and hopefully a renewed sense that our world is much bigger than our American borders. What we find "out there" through Carillet's camera and writings are not people to fear, but people to identify with and love. As one who is picky about the way photographs are often printed in books, I'm very happy with the quality of the printing found in "30 Reasons to Travel." Buy this book and enjoy it.
