Book Description

April 1, 2004
Americans have long believed that they live in a democratic nation--where government is responsive to the people and where wealth and happiness are available to all. In fact, as this work explores, the American government has never sought equality and is often more loyal to business and affluence than to the aspirations of the average citizen. This book delves into the violations of democracy, uncovering the pandering to corporations, the cultural manipulations of people, the violations of fundamental rights.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is definitely a great read and worth every dollar you'll spend. Shafer enumerates the many ways--small and significant--that democracy is subverted. The chapter on Iraq and censorship is wonderful but the look at literacy will make anyone think twice about the real worth of a formal education. The lasting power of the book is in its extensive reach. It goes well beyond politics and provides glimpses into media, education, and nutrition. Did you know you could be arrested in Colorado for disparaging meat? I didn't know it until I read this book. (Amazon.com reader review - April 30, 2004) --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

After reading this book I have a whole new outlook on the political system. This book displays an honest in-depth look at democracy. It is a masterpiece of truth and explains in great detail the decay of our goverment. It is backed by hard evidence and fact most of all I found it to be unafraid. Truly a superb read.
