Book Description

May 31, 2009 8 and up3 and upAmerican Girl (Book 2)
At last, cousin Ana has arrived at Ellis Island, and Rebecca can't wait to meet her. She's sure they'll be just like sisters, doing everything together. It's crowded with two families in one small apartment, but Rebecca is happy to share everything with Ana, even her clothes! At school, Rebecca is determined to help her cousin learn English and keep up in class, in spite of the other kids' teasing. But when the teacher tells her to include Ana in a special performance, Rebecca panics--Ana's broken English will ruin the show! Rebecca realizes this is one thing she does not want to do with her cousin. But how can she explain this to Ana?

5.0 out of 5 stars Temporary Twins, December 11, 2009
This review is from: Rebecca and Ana (American Girl) (Paperback)
Most girls probably long for a twin. Well, Rebecca gets her wish! Her cousin Ana has arrived from Russia, and since Rebecca can speak Yiddish and has hand-me-down clothing from her older twin sisters, she and her cousin make a perfect pair. Or do they? Ana can't speak English fluently, yet the teacher assigns her a part in a school show. Rebecca is worried that her cousin will humiliate her by making mistakes.

This second volume in the series has an hilarious scene with Rebecca and Ana haggling with a peddler. It helps set up Rebecca's flair for dramatic acting, which comes into play later on in the series. Author Jacqueline Dembar Greene has done an excellent job of setting up Rebecca as a believable character, with events taking place that are consistent with later ones.

I was disappointed that Ana's character shows up in this book as Rebecca's long-awaited cousin and closest and dearest friend, but then really doesn't appear again much until the fifth book in the series. It seems Ana's and Rebecca's families would be in a lot of contact when time allows. That being said, the time Rebecca and Ana get to spend together here is short but sweet.

This review is from: Rebecca and Ana (American Girl) (Paperback)
My Granddaughter had checked 3 of the Rebecca books out of her school library. Since she is only in Kindergarten she could only read a few chapters in the week she had them. The last week of school she cried her eyes out because she wouldn't be able to read any more about Ana. So, we got her 3 for her B'day and she was soooo excited. She LOVES these books and her parents love the good family values they portray. I haven't even seen them but she gives them 5 stars!
