Waxman's score for "Rebecca" set the high water mark for classic Hollywood gothic romance. Beautiful moments blossom throughout this score. This is strong, sustained composition, and this 1990 re-recording by the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra is absolutely wonderful. I'm wearing it out through repeated playing.

Adriano conducts a well recorded classic Franz Waxman score. The lack of one big sweeping melodic theme keeps this score just under the grand legendary Max Steiner's "Gone With The Wind".
Not that there isn't a lack of thematic material, the average cue is at least 4 minutes developing good ideas. The use of a novacord(an electronic keyboard instrument)illustrates effectively the spooky presence of the dead "Rebecca", but we could use more of it to really set the mood. Don't get me wrong, this score is beautiful and is typical of the great films of the 30s and 40s. There are far worse ways to spend an evening than listening to this generous 72 minute disc! |
