Book Description

February 2003
Chicago native B.J. Warren travels to the Florida island of Ana Lia to care for her grandmother's house after her grandmother has an accident and breaks her hip. Nothing and no one on the island is anywhere near what BJ would call normal. The island inhabitants exist in a world that cares little for what folks do on the mainland. The center of activity for their society revolves around a diner called Rebecca's Cove where the self-centered B.J. alienates just about every member of the small community. But, she meets her match in a local woman, Hobie Lynn Allen.

This is not a love at first sight story as both women find the other completely annoying and self-righteous. However, the island—and Rebecca's Cove—have an odd way of changing the way folks view their world and the people around them. Sometimes it's not a matter of what you're seeing, but rather, the position from which you see it.

BJ opened one eye and peered down the length of her body. She didn’t get far. About ten inches from her face, she ran into a pair of beady black eyes, midnight black nose, and a tiny pink tongue. The tongue moved in and out of the equally small mouth with the same rhythm BJ felt moving her body. She later blamed it on a residual effect from the pain medication, but she chose that moment to yell. More than just yell. BJ could hear herself scream like a girl.

"Aah!" BJ yelled out again when she saw a figure run into the room. She stopped when she realized it was the vet. "What the hell are you doing in here? No, don’t answer that, just get this...thing...off of me!"

Hobie quickly scooped the dog off the woman’s chest. Now that she knew there was no real emergency, she was trying desperately not to laugh at the prone woman. "It’s just Arturo. Did he scare you?" she asked, grinning in amusement.

BJ, realizing that she’d just made a total fool of herself over a dog, quickly tried to cover her own error in identifying the small animal. "I thought it was a rat."

This time Hobie did laugh; she just couldn’t help it. "You get a lot of five-pound albino rats in Chicago, do you?"

BJ fixed a cold stare in the redhead’s direction. It was quickly becoming the tall woman’s trademark expression. "We’re lousy with ’em," she replied flatly. "Look, what in the hell are you—Whoa!"

BJ had turned her body to look up at the standing woman and suddenly felt the coffee table sliding away from the couch—with her injured leg still on it. She tried to pull back, but the blanket wrapped around her legs prevented proper movement. It only took another five seconds for her to end up face down on the carpeted floor.

"Oh my God!" Hobie let go of Arturo and bent down to help.

"Shit, that hurt," BJ said. Attempting to rise, she felt the crown of her head connect sharply with the underside of the coffee table. Once more, she sank to the floor and groaned.

"Geez, you’re going to kill yourself. Let me help you."

"Don’t touch me! Please, just don’t touch me."

BJ rolled over and lay there. She looked up at the vet with an expression similar to amazement. "You look so normal, but you’re really the harbinger of doom. Are you an assassin? I mean, did someone put a hit out on me or something? And maybe they requested it to be a slow, torturous death?"

"I’m really so sorry." Hobie wasn’t sure why she was apologizing, but it seemed the thing to do.

"Why are you trying to kill me?" BJ asked in a small, defeated voice.

"Really, I’m doing no such thing. I can’t explain it," Hobie said with a sympathetic smile. "At least let me help you up."

"No! No, please don’t help me." BJ started to get up on her own. "Frankly, I don’t think my body can take any more help from you."

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, entertaining and humorous, May 30, 2003
This review is from: Rebecca's Cove (Paperback)
I hadn't read anything by this author before, so I was not sure what to expect. I made the mistake of starting to read it at 10:30pm. I couldn't put it down. It's not that it was so exciting, there was just never a good point where I wanted to put it down.

The characters were full and complete. The very unique persons populating the town could easily have been made into caricatures, but the weren't. They were treated with care and respect.

While it is, in essence, a love story it was also extremely funny at times. There were many times when I found myself chuckling in amusement. In particular there is a scene where Baylor explains being attacked by a bird that had tears rolling down my cheeks from laughing so hard. I'm not telling more about that scene, you'll just have to read it to believe it.

There are few books I read a second time. This one will be re-read more than once. If you're looking for a steamy, hot & heavy book, this is not it. Although I have to admit Baylor has a tremendous amount of sex appeal. It is a great story anytime you want a little romance and humor. It's a feel good book that doesn't over do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality work/ quality writer, September 25, 2003

I highly recommend this book and any other by LJ Maas. This author is a refreshing voice in the market who provides original story lines and well developed characters. I don't know LJ and I have no personal interest in boosting or bashing her. I just really like her writing. She isn't a formula writer. Each of her books is very different and that's what makes her so talented.

In Rebecca's Cove, we find two main characters who will either learn to love each other or kill one another. Their struggle is frustrating and fun. In addition to becoming attached to BJ and Hobie, I enjoyed the well-developed secondary characters as their interaction with these women added depth to the stories and gave our girls deeper personalities.

If you want to read an original, well-written story with emotion and depth, definitely read Rebecca's Cove.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the better ones, October 12, 2005

This is one of the better works of lesbian fiction that I have read, and I've read a lot of them. Some parts of the book literally made me laugh out loud. Good characters, good setting, and good plot.
