Refreshing, entertaining and humorous,
By E. Jean Alston "I only review items I would s... (Richardson, tx United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Rebecca's Cove (Paperback)
I hadn't read anything by this author before, so I was not sure what to expect. I made the mistake of starting to read it at 10:30pm. I couldn't put it down. It's not that it was so exciting, there was just never a good point where I wanted to put it down. The characters were full and complete. The very unique persons populating the town could easily have been made into caricatures, but the weren't. They were treated with care and respect. While it is, in essence, a love story it was also extremely funny at times. There were many times when I found myself chuckling in amusement. In particular there is a scene where Baylor explains being attacked by a bird that had tears rolling down my cheeks from laughing so hard. I'm not telling more about that scene, you'll just have to read it to believe it. There are few books I read a second time. This one will be re-read more than once. If you're looking for a steamy, hot & heavy book, this is not it. Although I have to admit Baylor has a tremendous amount of sex appeal. It is a great story anytime you want a little romance and humor. It's a feel good book that doesn't over do it.

Quality work/ quality writer,
By Ann (Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rebecca's Cove (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book and any other by LJ Maas. This author is a refreshing voice in the market who provides original story lines and well developed characters. I don't know LJ and I have no personal interest in boosting or bashing her. I just really like her writing. She isn't a formula writer. Each of her books is very different and that's what makes her so talented. In Rebecca's Cove, we find two main characters who will either learn to love each other or kill one another. Their struggle is frustrating and fun. In addition to becoming attached to BJ and Hobie, I enjoyed the well-developed secondary characters as their interaction with these women added depth to the stories and gave our girls deeper personalities. If you want to read an original, well-written story with emotion and depth, definitely read Rebecca's Cove.

This is one of the better works of lesbian fiction that I have read, and I've read a lot of them. Some parts of the book literally made me laugh out loud. Good characters, good setting, and good plot.

reminiscent of screwball comedy/romances,
By
This review is from: Rebecca's Cove (Paperback)
This book had me chuckling with its light screwball comedy/romance flavor. Watching big city writer B. J. fall apart both physically and emotionally on the quirky island of Ana Lia while trying to deny her growing interest in the local vet, Hobie Lynn, is a series of comedy of errors. Before B. J. knows it not only is she mellowed by the island, but also by its inhabitants and she comes to appreciate its allure that her grandmother has known for years.

Fun Read,

This review is from: Rebecca's Cove (Paperback)
I enjoyed the story. It's not my personal favorite of LJ Maas' best work, which is downright wonderful, in my opinion (None So Blind). But this story WAS fun. The banter between the lead characters was light, crisp, and humorous. The novel was well-paced and easy to read. And contrary to several of the reviews below, which look like they were written by the same angry person to me, the plot wasn't the same old same old. I wanted to read a romantic comedy. And that's what I got.

There's No Such Thing As An Accident...,
By
This review is from: Rebecca's Cove (Paperback)
Baylor Warren's elderly aunt is hospitalized with a broken hip and asks her to take care of her home on Ana Lia Island in south Florida. The island and people are very different from what Baylor is used to in Chicago. Soon after arriving on the island, Baylor has an accident of her own when local vet Hobie Lynn Allen runs her over with her truck. At first hostile torward each other, the women find themselves falling in love. Both are scared of their feelings, but are influenced by outside forces (island residents, Hobie's son, and Baylor's friend) to move forward.
I have liked everything I've read by Maas and this is no exception. This book was well-written and thoughtful, with a little suspense thrown in to boot. Additionally, I love finding a lesbian romance that isn't pure template. This story allowed the relationship to develop before they fell into bed, and the sex scenes were more sensual than pornographic. I think it takes real talent to pull that off. To top it off, the story was believable, even with the strange behaviors of the island residents (I grew up in Florida... must be all that sun that drives people cooky!). Strongly suggested for those who love a good story and would rather leave the porn to someone else. Recommended for a lazy day, perhaps with a bubble bath, accompanied with a carafe of pinot grigio and cheese with crackers.

The Best Yet!!!,

This review is from: Rebecca's Cove (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of everything by Maas that I can get my hands on but this book is by and far the best yet. I also made the mistake of starting it yesterday evening and I am currently sleep deprived do to the fact that I stayed up all night to finish it:-).In a genre where it is difficult to find a story which really pulls you in, her characters are real, the plot takes unexpected turns and the humor keeps you laughing. EXCELLENT!!!

I have read and enjoyed all of the books by LJ Maas, but this one is special. Not only is it well written, but it has a nice surprise. There is a great deal of humor in this book that will have you laughing out loud, which is not something I normally do. The main characters, BJ and Hobie, are very real: stubborn, hot tempered, compassionate, worried about commitment and big klutzes. You keep turning the pages because you don't know if they're going to finally realize how much they love each other or kill each other. Sometimes quite literally. Hobie has a really unfortunate habit of hitting people with her car. Along the way you learn about a magical island and the people who inhabit it, including two elderly lesbians who have been telling friends for years that they are sisters. And one of the sisters has a three foot tall invisible hamster that has to be respected. And then there's the witches, excuse me, Wiccan coven that all of the finest ladies on the island belong to. The book is fast-paced and very enjoyable. Are these two meant to be together? As one character Rebecca says, she just deals the Tarot cards, Fate takes care of the rest, but maybe with a little help. You'll like this book.

This is what I expect when reading a first rate lesbian fiction. L J Maas has written a very clever, funny book that sizzles in all the right places. I found her characters very delightful, and Baylor's stubbornness just had me laughing my pants off. The chemistry between the two main leads was great....fire and ice, just like the book says. Overall, a very good storyline with strong, structured character development. Definitely worth the money!
