Seven or eight years ago I heard "Les Elemens" on Austrian Classical Radio (Oe1) during my lunch break and it left me spell bound. Of course the opening chord of the first track "Le Cahos" (the chaos) a cluster of sound, unheard in baroque music and for almost the next two hundred years, was the main reason for the impression it had on me. You hear it the first time and you go OMG, what is this!!?? and you stop doing what you are doing just listening and wondering how it will develop. And then it develops into some of the most beautiful, colorful and original music I have heard.

As things sometimes go I did not immediately order the CD and for some time "forgot" about it. Later on, hearing other pieces of Rebel I decided to finally get the CD only to find out it was no longer available. At least not this interpretation by Mark Minkowskis "Musiciens du Louvre". So I ordered the version of Michi Gaigg.s L'Orfeo Barockorchester. This is a competent version indeed, but somehow for me it lacked the guts of Minkowskis. Christopher Hogwoods recording followed and it too was not "it". I am just a music lovers for more than 5 decades with a substantial CD collection), no musician or musicologist (therefore all you experts might as well skip this review). Maybe it is just the phenomenon, that the first heard interpretation of any piece of music sets sort of a standard thus other versions sound "worse" first, even when in fact better. I experienced this often times.

Well, a week or two I discovered this CD on amazon.com in the US (I am Austrian) for a reasonable price and immediately ordered it. The delivery note said I would get it in 4 to 6 weeks or so (standard shipping, per snail mail). The bigger was my joy to receive it within a week or so, namely today!
