Biography

The annals of rock'n'roll are full of cliche and superstition, of iconic references like the famous "third album" - or the eponymous one. As far as "the third" is concerned, Norwegian black metal masters Satyricon certainly delivered something extraordinary in the form of "Nemesis Divina". Back in 1996 it instantly placed them at the centre of one of ... Read more in Amazon's Satyricon Store

Menacing. Tormented. Sophisticated. Genuinely dark and impressive. I was a major black metal fanatic in my late teens and early twenties. Alot of the music I thought was cool then now seems cheesy and boring to me. I guess that is what is great about being young, being easily amused. Some things stay with you and still matter as you grow old and can still be appreciated even as you outgrow the goofy trends and fads that feuled your rebelious youth. Satyricons older music, Rebel Extravaganza in particular, is an album that hasn't lost it's luster as I become more jaded and cynical as time passes and I inch ever closer to departing this world. This album is so awesome that I'm sure it will echo on the "other side".
That last bit may seem a bit dramatic, but I feel that this album is just that good. Good enough, not only to receive cheesy illiterations from myself, but a must listen for any original "black metaller" who hasn't heard this before. I got into Black Metal during the rise of Emperor in the mid/late 90s and soon began to appreciate the older works of Bathory, Celtic Frost, Mayhem and many more. These groups simply have produced works that are "timeless".
Satyricon's "Rebel Extravaganza" is also timeless. I'm sure that any one with a black metal history or current black metal fanaticism will find something here to revere. This album is awesome.

I know I know, Industrial Black Metal. Damn those guitars just crush. Frost puts on a clinic. No drum machine here folks. Buy the whole damn Satyricon catalog. Even 2013's self-titled, which I own on orange vinyl. Hail!

As a somewhat new Satyricon fan who has been steadily working his way through their back catalog I find this transitional album to be good, but nowhere near the caliber of their more recent work like The Age of Nero, Now Diabolical or even Volcano.
I think it's very much the work of a band in transition.
It sounds like a band bored and a little frustrated with their previous traditional black metal albums like Nemisis Divina (a classic) but without a clear idea of where they wanted to go.
I think they did eventually find a great sound with more focused, streamlined and still very heavy and black metal influenced albums like Age of Nero and Now Diabolical.
Many long time fans with disagree with me but these later works are the band's best works to date.
The version of this album I received also contained the Intermezzo EP and bought as a used CD was a great value.
