Book Description

November 1, 2005
Even before the rest of North Carolina joined her sister states in secession, the people of the Lower Cape Fear were filled with enthusiasm for the Southern Cause - so much so that they actually seized Forts Johnston and Caswell, at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, weeks before the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter. When the state finally did secede, Wilmington became the most important port city of the Confederacy, keeping Robert E. Lee supplied with the munitions and supplies he needed to fight the war against the North. Dedicated soldiers like William Lamb and W.H.C. Whiting turned the sandy beaches of southern New Hanover and Brunswick Counties into a series of fortresses that kept the Union navy at bay for four years. The mighty Fort Fisher and a series of smaller forts offerd safe haven for daring blockade runners that brought in the Confederacy's much-needed supplies. In the process, they turned the quiet port of Wilmington into a boomtown. In this book that was fifteen years in the making, James L. Walker, Jr. has chronicled the story of the Lower Cape Fear and the forts and men that guarded it during America's bloodiest conflict, from the early days of the war to the fall of Wilmington in February 1865.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book on Ft. Fisher, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Rebel Gibraltar: Fort Fisher and Wilmington, C.S.A. (Paperback)
Great book bringing together Walkers personal experience of the area with historical fact to create a more comprehensive angle on the topic. Having read other books on Ft. Fisher, this one ranks high on its appeal to the informed reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walker Captures Fort Fisher, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Rebel Gibraltar: Fort Fisher and Wilmington, C.S.A. (Paperback)
In 1991, Rod Gragg gave us the story of the battle for Fort Fisher. In 1997, Chris Fonvielle gave us the Wilmington Campaign. Perhaps some of us wondered what James L. Walker could possibly add to these two fine books. Well, the answer is quite a lot. Walker not only covers the final campaign and battle from late 1864 to early 1865 but he goes back to the very beginning and gives us a panoramic view of the forts amazing history from start to finish. The parade of fascinating characters, the colorful stories of human interest and military derring-do will captivate any reader who loves North Carolina or Civil War history. I have taught both for 35 years and I give this book my very highest recommendation.

Betty T. "Betty" (North Carolina,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rebel Gibraltar: Fort Fisher and Wilmington, C.S.A. (Paperback)
This is a very informative book and reveals a portion of North
Carolina history with which I was not too familiar. From this
book I learned a lot about the history of the battles of Fort
Fisher and Wilmington during the War Between the States. It is
obvious that the author spent considerable time on research and
the result is this wonderful book about these battles and the
true stories from his ancestors of the times during the war
in this part of the South. Betty T.
