What are you, Yankee or Englishwoman? Damn, that's a rum touch to have an enemy for a daughter. But Henrietta was no one's enemy. She came to London from Boston in search of her father-a father thought lost to her until she discovered her aunt's treachery. Now armed with her mother's marriage papers, she set sail for England to prove her identity and, unknowingly, to gain a fortune-and a love-she had never dreamed of. Henrietta was too beautiful to ignore. Her wealthy father was enchanted with her. Her stepmother hated her on sight. and her stepbrother Cedric was an enigma. But nothing would stop Henrietta from becoming the talk of London society. I very much recommend this book to those who love the regency period. A wonderful read and a fine example of regency writing!

I bought this because I have liked some other books by Hodge, and someone said this one was her favorite. I was seriously disappointed. The heroine is too naive to be believed, walking into one mess after another because she's just so good hearted and trusting. She's lived all her life in America, but she cheerfully goes to England while the two countries are at war and never spends a minute homesick for her native land. You might gather that I didn't think much of her, and therefore didn't care what became of her. As to the hero, [plot spoiler] he's barely there--shows up smiling once or twice, then is suddenly The Man of Her Dreams. Really, she's written way more interesting books than this.

Henrietta decides to leave Boston in search of her father in England. Her father believes that she died at birth. Once they are reunited, her stepmother is afraid that Henrietta will ruin everything for her.
