Pepe Moreno's Rebel,
By
This review is from: Rebel (Paperback)
Seeing that there was only one other review, and having recently read Pepe Moreno's "Rebel", I thought I would offer my feelings on the work. The story takes place in a futuristic take on New York City, the city is in a state of post war decay, and the only inhabitants appear to be the many rival gangs who drive chopped/stylized/weapon heavy vehicles. Territories are defended, encroached upon, and battles ensue. There are some visceral moments where the writing and distinct art style come together to deliver some thrills, though for the most part the story, characters, and overall story arc feel like any number of cliché action movies/books. What really captured my attention was distinct coloring, the colors in this book are fantastic, and there are panels that are just incredible. If you are interested in checking out "Rebel" from a technical standpoint I say go for it, the art is great, albeit if the stylings of the characters/overall look do seem a bit dated. For its time I am sure this comic was on the "hardcore" side of things, though in light of the content of adult comics today this book feels actually somewhat light. Except for the central character, the supporting cast, and even the main villain they are largely one dimensional and uninteresting. There are some pretty good lines here and there, though for the most part the story is weak. Though the art work delivers, and Pepe's use of color is superb. The parallels between other works within the genre are clear (Escape From New York, The Road Warrior, and a bit of the Warriors), so if you are a fan of that type of stuff I think you will find this book entertaining, if not I would steer clear.
