3.0 out of 5 stars Not Essential But Plenty Of Fun Tunes, January 28, 2002

I'm a big fan of Southern Rock so its hard to disappoint me with a tasty compilation. However, this is not loaded with prime time material. Molly Hatchet has done so many better tunes than Stone In Your Heart with the wretched synthesizers. I would have preferred Flirtin' With Disaster, Bounty Hunter, Gator Country, or Fall Of The Peacemakers as a better selection from that fine band. I'm not a big fan of Wet Willie's Street Corner Serendade either. They are a tad bit overrated.

However, The South's Gonna Do It Again, Ghost Riders, Panama Red, Change It, and Tuff Enough bop and groove just fine for me. I never figured Stevie Ray Vaughn or the TBirds for southern rock but to each his own I guess. Anyway, I'm No Angel and Rock Bottom rock pretty hard for me and the Barefoot Jerry Tune is cute if nothing else. Worth it if you can find it [inexpensive].

3.0 out of 5 stars Down South Jukin', August 1, 2001

This review is from: Rebel Rock (Audio CD)
A so-so compilation of Southern rock acts that the good folks at CBS/Sony have licensed and repackaged (so that means no Lynyrd Skynyrd, no Allman Bros., etc.). What you DO get are some passable Southern boogie cuts, some familiar (Charlie Daniels, Outlaws) and some kind of obscure (Wet Willie, Barefoot Jerry). Presumably because they're already on the Sony label, Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Fabulous Thunderbirds are here with "Change It" and "Tuff Enuff," respectively. Kind of a stretch to see them in this company, but their presence is welcome nonetheless.

Even though the Allman Bros. Band is not represented per se, there are two choice cuts from current and former band members Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts. Allman's "I'm No Angel" was a minor hit a few years ago and it's fine, while the Dickey Betts Band's "Rock Bottom" is a nice, solid party boogie that closes the CD.

This CD would be a great companion piece with another compilation, "Goin' South," which maybe repeats "Tuff Enuff" only. And with another budget CD, "The Best of Southern Rock," on Polygram's Rebound Records label. These three CDs could be the soundtrack for your next keg party in the woods, pig roast or even a tailgate party at a NASCAR race.
