Book Description

August 24, 2007
In April 1865 the Civil War was over for most Americans, including the more than 600,000 soldiers, North and South, who died from wounds or disease. Confederate President Jefferson Davis and much of his administration had fled Richmond, accompanied by an escort of cavalry, various hangers-on, and all that was left of the treasury.

With the Davis party was a navy paymaster, James S. Semple. In Washington, Georgia, a small town untouched by the war, he was entrusted with $86,000 in gold coin and bullion (about $1 million in today's money) and disappeared into the night. The treasure was secured in the false bottom of a carriage.

The Rebel and the Rose reveals for the first time what happened to the Confederate gold, until now a mystery. However, this historically accurate story is more than the accounting of a missing treasury. It is the story of a man on the run who stashes the gold and seeks to escape capture by fleeing through a devastated South swarming with Federal troops.

After hiding in Okefenokee Swamp for months, Semple eventually reaches Nassau. Ultimately, he takes refuge in the North with Julia Gardiner Tyler, the widow of former U.S President John Tyler and stepmother of Semple's estranged wife, Letitia. Semple is drawn to Julia, and she to him, by circumstances of war and its aftermath.

Unable to accept the end of the Confederacy and Union domination of the South, Semple collaborates with other disenfranchised leaders exiled in Canada, often traveling between the U.S. and Canada in clandestine activities under the alias of Allen S. James. Whenever he can travel to New York City, he spends as much time as he can with Julia and her family.

The Rebel and the Rose focuses on the symbiotic bond that develops between Semple ("the Rebel") and Tyler ("the Rose"). With well-documented detail, Wesley Millett and Gerald White examine Semple's growing passion for Julia, the fury of Letitia over her husband's relationship with the former first lady (and her stepmother), and the concerted attempt by members of the Tyler family, even today, to disguise the history of the Semples and the Tylers.

From the Author

Wesley Millett: This is a book that took more than 10 years to write, mostly because of the depth of research and our commitment to accuracy and verification. At times, Jerry and I worked independently, each focusing on a specific aspect of the research. As the research began to give us the answers we were looking for, we joined forces to complete the research and write the book.
The central character, James Semple, is not well known in Civil War history, but at the end of the war, he was entrusted by President Jefferson Davis with the remaining gold and silver in the Confederate treasury. This book tells for the first time what happened to the treasury. It also reveals the romantic attachment between Semple and Julia Gardiner Tyler, the beautiful widow of former president of the United States, John Tyler, as they struggled to survive at the end of the war.

More About the Author

Wesley Millett has been a researcher and writer for more than 35 years. A resident of Massachusetts, he currently owns his own consulting business that specializes in marketing research, and he frequently contributes articles to various national and international publications. A graduate of the University of Virginia, he received his initial instruction in writing from noted authors, including William Faulker. Much of his free time for years was spent roaming battlefields and in studying the Civil War. A single line in Confederate President Jefferson Davis' "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government" set him on mission that culminated in his coauthoring "The Rebel and the Rose" with Gerald White, and a half line in an obscure letter written by Davis's wife, Varina, to an old friend helped solve the mystery of the missing Confederate gold.

This review is from: The Rebel and the Rose: James a Semple, Julia Gardiner Tyler, and the Lost Confederate Gold (Hardcover)
The Rebel and the Rose is an extraordinary - and true - tale of the final days of the Confederate government, its exit from Richmond, the Confederate treasury money and the relationship between Julia Gardiner Tyler and James A. Semple. For all the books over all the years written of this era, The Rebel and the Rose manages to uncover a little known story full of interesting details and mysteries. The research put into this book is impressive. Highly recommended for those interested in the Civil War and history in general. You wont be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebel & The Rose is Found Gold!, December 6, 2007
This review is from: The Rebel and the Rose: James a Semple, Julia Gardiner Tyler, and the Lost Confederate Gold (Hardcover)
For any Civil War or history enthusiast, The Rebel and The Rose is by far one of the best novels written to date. The author's writing keeps the reader locked in to each page desperate for more. While historically the whereabouts of the lost Confederate gold remains a mystery, you have to enjoy the detail for which is was written.
The book is very enjoyable, a fun read with facts and intrigue and lost rebel gold! This book is one of my absolute favorites in my Civil War collection!!

I really enjoyed reading this book. The depth of the "detective work" done by the authors is outstanding. The mystery and the relationships amongst all the individuals was developed and explained very well. Thank you for bringing this portion of the Civil War into such outstanding light.
