Still Roots Rockin'..., October 24, 2005
This review is from: Rebel Souls (Audio CD)
...even though this would signal the beginning of the end to their roots sound. You can see hints of their future pop-driven sound in their electrified compositions on this album. But their transformation was merely a mirror image of the direction reggae was taking during the 80s (and dancehall is a direct offspring of that).
But Aswad had been rockin' the real stuff since reggae's formation. By this album's release they were already the hottest, brightest thing in reggae (hence the crazy costumes on the cover). They do not disappoint with their usual serious approach to songwriting reflected in "In My Father's House", or "Just a Little Herb", which is up there among their best works ever. And also among their best written, performed, and produced song is the lovers rock track, "Need Your Love", which solidified their mastery of songwriting, regardless of genre.
Overall, I'm not going to rate this album as their best, but certainly there's a few tracks that are pure Aswad and shows the lads maturing as songwriters and musicians. As a fan, I like to see growth and this is that. Unfortunately, their trademark roots rock style was virtually extinct after this collection.

Their Best Period Mid 1980's, September 19, 2005
This review is from: Rebel Souls (Audio CD)
The whole group was intact at this time..and it seems that their natural progression from laid back roots into a more rocking synthesized soundscape did them justice..The front cover sports them as sci-fi superstars which they had become at this time..the whole CD is great, but their covers of Toots(55-46) and Marvin Gaye(Mercy,Mercy) are exuberant..their interesting use of horns, sweet melodies, rasta posturing, creatively defined them along with Steel Pulse as the 2 great UK bands playing reggae of the time. This CD should be re-released with added stuff, if possible as a twofer with the also excellent followup TO THE TOP..the sound was well mixed on this CD,ASWAD were master technicians ...I saw these guys in NYC at the time and it was a rocking roots affair gathering in the bright lights they deserved before they further morphed into a more of a Abba-esque R & B reggae groove..

Great CD to ease your mind, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Rebel Souls (Audio CD)
Rebel Souls has many great songs in a modern 80's style. "Rebel" is a powerful faster tempo version of "I A Rebel Soul" from their self titled album. If you like roots reggae that's the album you want. The opening songs are strong and with an upbeat "54-46 cover song from Toots and the Maytals. After brilliant "Just a little Herb" the album mellows out and has a big finnish with "Chasin' for the Breeze".
