Amazon.com Review

This is the second volume of Star Wars newspaper strips from the early 1980s reformatted for the comic book page. The stories, which take place between the end of Star Wars, the movie, and the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, feel natural instead of forced like so many of the other Star Wars spin-off books. After the events in the previous volume, Luke, Han, and Leia find their rebel base under attack. And so the search for a new home base begins.

The Star Wars comic strip never ran in my hometown paper so I rarely got to see it. I was spurred to get this collection by a recent magazine article, and it was well worth it because these are very enjoyable Star Wars tales. Putting aside any questions of how these stories might fit into "the cannon", the Star Wars geek in me quite enjoyed the depiction of how the rebels identified Hoth as their new base planet as well as an early meeting with Admiral Ackbar. More impressive, though, was a story in which Darth Vader engages an actor to impersonate Obi-Wan Kenobi, with unexpected results. Star Wars spin-offs are a hit and miss proposition, but this book definitely falls into the former category.

Continuing the newspaper series by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson. In this collection, the Rebellion sniffs out a traitor amongst some new allies, Han enters Chewie in a gladiator match to the death to retrieve a mystical gem, Luke faces an ancient evil lurking in the Massassi Temples on Yavin, Darth Vader christens his super star destroyer, The Executor, and the Mon Calamari join the rebellion.

The stories are excellent and I think after 2 volumes, I finally have the unique pacing down pat. But what I really love is the artwork. Not every panel of Luke, Han, and Leia look like their real life counterparts. But the renderings of droids, Lord Vader, and vehicles by the talented artist, Al Williamson is stunning! It also helps that the editorial team at Dark Horse did a museum quality job on the restoration and coloring of these strips.

I am so glad that I have volume #3. This book ends on a cliffhanger and I don' think I could wait very long to find out what happens next in what is, unfortunately, the swan song to a fantastic run of Star Wars universe tales.

My son borrowed the first volume from the library. Turned out it was continued in vol 2. The library didn't have it and so my son bugged me until we got it. He couldn't put it down. I was glad to see him excited about a book and now he is taking care of it as a collector.

My 6 year old son and i read this before bed every night ... sharing my love for all things Star Wars it's a great way to share the expanded universe with him. Not as tight a story or as great as graphics as the newer comics, it still is an enjoyable read.
