My son borrowed the first volume from the library. Turned out it was continued in vol 2. The library didn't have it and so my son bugged me until we got it. He couldn't put it down. I was glad to see him excited about a book and now he is taking care of it as a collector.

Get it before it goes out of print!,
This review is from: The Rebel Storm (Classic Star Wars, Volume Two) (Paperback)
The Star Wars comic strip never ran in my hometown paper so I rarely got to see it. I was spurred to get this collection by a recent magazine article, and it was well worth it because these are very enjoyable Star Wars tales. Putting aside any questions of how these stories might fit into "the cannon", the Star Wars geek in me quite enjoyed the depiction of how the rebels identified Hoth as their new base planet as well as an early meeting with Admiral Ackbar. More impressive, though, was a story in which Darth Vader engages an actor to impersonate Obi-Wan Kenobi, with unexpected results. Star Wars spin-offs are a hit and miss proposition, but this book definitely falls into the former category.

My 6 year old son and i read this before bed every night ... sharing my love for all things Star Wars it's a great way to share the expanded universe with him. Not as tight a story or as great as graphics as the newer comics, it still is an enjoyable read.

Disappointing as a set of Star Wars stories,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)

I will always find it difficult to get excited over Star Wars comics, the action on the screen is so entertaining that when reading a Star Wars comic, the part contributed by my imagination is distracting. I envision Luke, Han, C3PO and Leia in their own voices and my thinking their voices is a very poor second to hearing them. Therefore, I tend to find any Star Wars comic that I read to be boring. That is not the case with the Star Wars books; with no images my mind is free to conjure up the visual complement aand I am not acting out dialog balloons.
There was nothing in this book capable of overcoming this prejudice, the villains are often creatures that are not well explained or described. The adventures lack the challenging charm of the movies; there is little depth to the stories, although they attempt to fill out some of the background on some of the characters, most notably Admiral AckBar. Han is still the impulsive fighter; once again you wonder how he has managed to survive so long as a smuggler, dealing with the ruthless villains and gangsters that he did business with. Disappointing as a set of Star Wars stories, this comic fails to generate any of the interest of the movies. While this is admittedly a high bar, it just never really gets off the ground.

Our heroes are busy battling Monsterous creatures.,

This review is from: The Rebel Storm (Classic Star Wars, Volume Two) (Paperback)
This is a review of classic Star Wars Volume 2 - the rebel storm. This is the continuing collection of newspaper comic strips produced in the early 1980s published July, 1995 and printed in Canada. Vader is alive and Han is not in carbonite, so this is the continuing story of our heros during the period of episode 4 thru 6. The stories are fun to read and the artwork is slightly better than the typical comic strip. Our heroes are busy battling Monsterous creatures much more than batling the empire. Ben and Vader make appearances. The inking and binding are excellent but this is not up to the standards that exist today, hence the 3 star rating. Unlike some of the early SW work, these stories DO fit in with the Expanded Universe that fits around the movies. Recommended.

Decent Star Wars addition,

This book is the second part in a series of collections which brings back all those classic Star Wars comics. Although it is nice to have all these hard to find classics available again, the stories and art just don't match up with whats being produced today. For great Star Wars comics, check out the Rogue Squadron books also being distributed in paperback form by Dark Horse.
