Good Not Great. III is getting repetitive,
By Just Me "Customer" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rebel Within (Parental Advisory) (Audio CD)
Has some good songs, My favorite albums were his first three albums. With my favorite being Lovesick Broke & Drifting followed by STH.
Here's the deal. I like III, I've seen him 3 times live. But I honetly don't know if he can write an original song anymore. Does he have a similar voice to his Grandaddy, Heck yeah he does, but his lyrics are becoming corny & stale like his Fathers music.(Hank Jr.) How many songs do we need telling us that you're wild, like to do drugs, and get laid? Are you trying to convince us, becasue if you are we're convinced, Next subject please. Now that's not saying all songs are bad. I enjoyed quite a bit. But I think this album was made pretty effortlessly and without a whole heck of a lot of thought.

Don't let the negative reviews of this album fool you. Is this Hank III's best album? No, of course not, even III has said that, himself. He said that he'd be lucky if he ever topped "Straight to Hell", which is regarded by almost all of his fans to be his best album to date. The important thing to remember here is that this is his last album for Curb Records. In fact, at the end of this summer (I think) is when his contract with them ends. I think that he is saving his best material for when his Curb contract expires. THEN, I think you will see what he's really capable of. Having said that, though, I really don't think this album is all that bad. It's probably my least favorite, but it's still 100 times better than the crap they play on "country" radio, these days. One thing I noticed, being a musician, is that all of the songs seem to be tuned down a half-step. Whether this is to better fit his voice or just an experiment, I'm not sure, but it gives the album a darker, more somber tone, overall. The songs aren't bad, but they're not his best, either. It's hard to write, though, when your creativity is being stifled by a major record label. Just wait until he can be free and team up with someone like Wayne Hancock, Dale Watson, or even Those Poor Bastards. Even though he hasn't topped "Straight to Hell" yet, don't give up on Hank III....I have a feeling that the best is yet to come!

The "Rebel Within" = A Great CD of Unique American "Country Music"!!!!!!,
By Gary Covington "Southern Rocker" (Louisiana, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

My first impression was, that this would be a superficial album CD, but it was on sell so I bought one. Wow, I was surprised. This is some great music. It's hard to categorize it. It's "Country", it's "Alternative Country", it's "Hard Country", it's "Outlaw Country", it's "Honky Tonk", it's "Southern Rock", and on and on. But, whatever the categorization, it is simply some great original, unique American Music.
The Musicians: Drums: Shawn McWilliams & Hank III Acoustic Rhythm & Vocals: Hank III Stand Up Steel & Dobro: Andy Gibson Electric Guitar & Acoustic Lead: Johnny Hiland Stand Up Bass: Zach Sedd Banjo: Tim Carter, Daniel Mason, Charlie Cushman Fiddle: Billy Contreras Note: All songs were written by Hank III except "Karmageddon". The Songs: 1.Gettin' Drunk & Fallin' Down 2:40 (It's not as bad as it sounds, it's kinda funny.) 2.Rebel Within 4:38 3.Lookin' For A Mountain 4:50 4.Gone But Not Forgotten 4:53 5.Drinkin' Ain't Hard To Do 3:30 6.Moonshiner's Life 3:28 7.#5 6:32 8.Karmageddon 4:29 9.Lost in Oklahoma 4:02 10.Tore Up and Loud 3:48 11.Drinkin' Over Momma 3:10 This guy, Hank III, and these songs are not superficial at all. Hank III is a very talented singer-songwriter, just like his Dad and his Granddad. This is some great music. I've done a lot of reviews, both good & bad, and I really like this one. It's a "keeper", and I recommend it. Thanks!!!!
