The outlaw spirit is alive and well in the latest release 'Rebel Within' from Hank III. It's wallowing and raw sound offers die hard fans a glimpse of classic Hank III. The album features top standout tracks such as the hypnotically entranced 'Karmageddon' and the rousing tune 'Tore Up And Loud'... all showcasing the true rebel within.

It's hard to write, though, when your creativity is being stifled by a major record label.

Yea there are songs on the album that are ok at times but it just didnt feel like their hearts where in the album at all!
Richard Stephens
This is GOOD and it is REAL and you won't find anything like it in Nashville or on FM Country stations.

Don't let the negative reviews of this album fool you. Is this Hank III's best album? No, of course not, even III has said that, himself. He said that he'd be lucky if he ever topped "Straight to Hell", which is regarded by almost all of his fans to be his best album to date. The important thing to remember here is that this is his last album for Curb Records. In fact, at the end of this summer (I think) is when his contract with them ends. I think that he is saving his best material for when his Curb contract expires. THEN, I think you will see what he's really capable of. Having said that, though, I really don't think this album is all that bad. It's probably my least favorite, but it's still 100 times better than the crap they play on "country" radio, these days. One thing I noticed, being a musician, is that all of the songs seem to be tuned down a half-step. Whether this is to better fit his voice or just an experiment, I'm not sure, but it gives the album a darker, more somber tone, overall. The songs aren't bad, but they're not his best, either. It's hard to write, though, when your creativity is being stifled by a major record label. Just wait until he can be free and team up with someone like Wayne Hancock, Dale Watson, or even Those Poor Bastards. Even though he hasn't topped "Straight to Hell" yet, don't give up on Hank III....I have a feeling that the best is yet to come!

Has some good songs, My favorite albums were his first three albums. With my favorite being Lovesick Broke & Drifting followed by STH.
Here's the deal. I like III, I've seen him 3 times live.

But I honetly don't know if he can write an original song anymore.

Does he have a similar voice to his Grandaddy, Heck yeah he does, but his lyrics are becoming corny & stale like his Fathers music.(Hank Jr.)

How many songs do we need telling us that you're wild, like to do drugs, and get laid? Are you trying to convince us, becasue if you are we're convinced, Next subject please.

Now that's not saying all songs are bad. I enjoyed quite a bit. But I think this album was made pretty effortlessly and without a whole heck of a lot of thought.

My first impression was, that this would be a superficial album CD, but it was on sell so I bought one. Wow, I was surprised. This is some great music. It's hard to categorize it. It's "Country", it's "Alternative Country", it's "Hard Country", it's "Outlaw Country", it's "Honky Tonk", it's "Southern Rock", and on and on. But, whatever the categorization, it is simply some great original, unique American Music.

The Musicians:
Drums: Shawn McWilliams & Hank III
Acoustic Rhythm & Vocals: Hank III
Stand Up Steel & Dobro: Andy Gibson
Electric Guitar & Acoustic Lead: Johnny Hiland
Stand Up Bass: Zach Sedd
Banjo: Tim Carter, Daniel Mason, Charlie Cushman
Fiddle: Billy Contreras

Note: All songs were written by Hank III except "Karmageddon".

The Songs:
1.Gettin' Drunk & Fallin' Down 2:40 (It's not as bad as it sounds, it's kinda funny.)
2.Rebel Within 4:38
3.Lookin' For A Mountain 4:50
4.Gone But Not Forgotten 4:53
5.Drinkin' Ain't Hard To Do 3:30
6.Moonshiner's Life 3:28
7.#5 6:32
8.Karmageddon 4:29
9.Lost in Oklahoma 4:02
10.Tore Up and Loud 3:48
11.Drinkin' Over Momma 3:10

This guy, Hank III, and these songs are not superficial at all. Hank III is a very talented singer-songwriter, just like his Dad and his Granddad. This is some great music. I've done a lot of reviews, both good & bad, and I really like this one. It's a "keeper", and I recommend it. Thanks!!!!

There are no surprises on the newest cd by Hank III, Rebel Within. It is musically similar, although somewhat quieter, and lyrically similar to his last few efforts, Straight to Hell (my favorite) and Damn Right, Rebel Proud. Like those last two, it is also graced with a parental advisory sticker for a few well-placed f-words. No, no surprises at all.

And, that's good.

I bought this cd wanting to hear sharply played, gutbucket honky tonk music. I wanted songs about living hard and having your heart broken. And, I wanted some straight defiance and a sense of fun. That's exactly what Rebel Within delivered. I'd listen to country radio again if they'd play songs like these.

This record has received mixed reviews from many people and publications, mainly because it's not Straight to Hell but the thing is,Straight to Hell has already been released so it's not like Hank can make it all over again.

That being said, this is a solid,well-recorded country album.Hank III himself has said its not his best release mainly because he didn't want to risk losing his best songs to Curb Records (his former record label; TRW was his last release for Curb)

If you know anything about Hank Williams III you know he is not a slacker and this disc doesn't disappoint.TRW kicks off with the honky tonk,Merle Haggard-esque opener of "Gettin' Drunk & Fallin' Down" and immediately goes in to the title track which is reminiscent of "Long Hauls & Close Calls" (from Damn Right & Rebel Proud)

One of my favorite tunes on the album is one that was not penned by Hank called "Karmageddon". It is very doom-y and trance-inducing and could pass as a b-side to Those Poor Bastard's Satan is Watching album.

Other favorites include "Lookin' For a Mountain","Drinkin' Over Mama" and "Tore Up & Loud" which is what i call the 'Heaviest country song ever written'

Do yourself a favor and pick this album up today!
