Ross, a journalist/correspondent of Latin American populist struggles, recounts the story of the Zapatista guerrilla uprising in the remote Mexican state of Chiapas on New Year's Day, 1994. Written in a slang-filled style, Ross's account tells of spirited rebels, oppressive vested interests, environmental destruction, political intrigue and mysterious assassinations, and the earnest effort and sacrifice of those who would improve the lot of impoverished Mexicans. Background stories on prominent figures increase our understanding of a struggle that has persisted for some 500 years. The lure of U.S. investment (NAFTA) plays a part as well. Despite the disillusionment of the Zapatistas in failing to attain all their goals, the sense that the struggle has broadened and deepened throughout Mexico is clearly conveyed. A gripping yet disturbing tale; recommended for general readership.
