Book Description

0198215762 978-0198215769 May 24, 1990
Why did Imperial China collapse? What were the causes of the rise to power of the Chinese Communist Party? Why did Commuist China rebel against Stalinist methods of socialist construction? These are among the questions addressed in this comprehensive, one-volume history of China from the 1800s to the present. Gray focuses on China's problems of development--the decay and collapse of the Chinese Empire, its failure to recover in the first half of the twentieth century, its rapid recovery since the Communist Party revolution of 1949--and carries his analysis through to the massacre in Tiananmen Square. His accessible text is supplemented by a chronology, eight maps, full notes and index, and a list of further reading, making this an indispensable volume for all students of Chinese and Asian history.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gray's analytical and argumentative approach is especially useful on the late 19th-century modernisation processes."--London Review of Books

"Gray has incorporated the latest scholarship and presented a lively, cogent, and hardheaded case for the benefits of Western contact and the rationality of warlord responses during the Republican era....This is a refreshingly candid reassessment of modern Chinese history that opens up many new avenues of investigation."--Choice

"Jack Gray's work is at once readable and definitive as a political survey."--Steven Sage, Middle Tennessee State University

This review is from: Rebellions and Revolutions: China from the 1800s to the 1980s (Short Oxford History of the Modern World) (Paperback)
I found this book by Jack Gray dealt with the history of modern China very succesfully, and provided a factual account of history until the early 1980's. I particularly liked the epilogue covering the events of Tiananmen Square in 1989. Altogether a very good book!
