5.0 out of 5 stars Montgomery Gentry's REBELS ON THE RUN October 19, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Classic Montgomery Gentry. They and their recorded music have been sorely missed. Their last CD - Back When I Knew It All - was one of their best, if not THE best, and this one will be in close competition. Bought my CD thru their fan club and the insider notes were even autographed.

Everyone needs to listen to REBELS ON THE RUN - you won't be able to resist purchasing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Album October 18, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Another Great Album By MG. I was dispointed with ITUNES when I pre orded the cd from them they gave me the cd with Simple thing that skiped and where I come from that skiped. I didnt pre orded Rebels on the run from I tunes to get jacked out of two songs. I love MG to death and Troy is amazing with his vocals, I am going to start getting my music from here. I would tell people to buy it just not from I tunes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Montgomery Gentry on the Run to the Top with "Rebels" October 18, 2011

Prime Cuts: I Like Those People, Empty, Missing You

What Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings were to the outlaw movement in the seventies is what Montgomery Gentry is to Southern country-rock in the current Millennium. Their penchant for volume-cranking hard rock over machismo lyrics where scars and tattoos were the subject matters generated indispensable hits such as "Speed," "Hell Yeah," "Lucky Man" and "Roll with Me." However, as the hits rolled on the opinions of the bosses at their record company also proliferated. Thus, undue pressure was given to these boys to conform more and more to country radio. As a result, their latter singles were so manufactured for radio that they backfired resulting in low charting entries and their CDs being sent to bargain bins. It took a bout of cancer and a messy divorce for Eddie Montgomery for the duo to finally wake up and take stock of their careers. After leaving Sony Music Entertainment and inking with Average Joe Records, "Rebels on the Run" finds Montgomery Gentry returning to the dance that first brought them to fame. "Rebels on the Run" harkens back to their debut record "Tattoos and Scars" where the songs are no longer made from the same cookie cutter. Rather, each of these 11 cuts possesses individuality, character and attitude. And they are performed with a renewed vim that for the first time in years this duo sounds like they were singing as if their lives hang on every word. Also, the songs canvas more themes and they come from a larger canon of prolific writers including Paul Overstreet, Brett James, Rivers Rutherford, Phil O'Donnell and even Christian artist Matthew West.

Producer Michael Knox who was responsible to catapult a relative unknown Jason Aldean to super stardom was brought in to helm this disc. Knox certainly knows how to capture the electrifying live performances of the duo on disc with album opener "Damn Right I Am" as a prime example. Though the song is in the usual he-man fare of self-affirmation, the excitement of the performance here is palatable. Just as Southern rockers often exalt the ethics of the blue-collars, "Work Hard, Play Harder" lays out the duo's life's philosophy over some sheer electric guitar crunch. Southern clannishness is further celebrated when Alabama's Randy Owen and the duo's icon Charlie Daniels were brought in to sing with them on the irresistibly Paul Overstreet co-write "I Like Those People." Catchy, memorable and with the three parties complementing rather than out singing each other--this is hit bound stuff. If the album is to be faulted, there is a predictably of its lyrics evidenced in the Charlie Daniels' like "Simple Things" -where the duo like many, many country acts gives a yawn list of things such as fishing, spending more time with family as ways of simplifying life.

Not every song here is power rock, the boys do get to flash their soulful side too. "Empty" ranks as one of their most piercing ballads--describing with haunting details the emptiness of a life deprived of love here the protagonist of the song prefers to spend time caught up in a traffic jam rather than spending time in an empty house. This is heart rendering stuff that really articulates loneliness in concrete ways. Recalling some of the duo's most gorgeous ballads such as "She Loves Me" and "Twenty Years Ago," "Missing You" is reflective, heartfelt yet without easing for a iota the emotional punch of this heartbreaker. Things do get more cheery with the pop sounding cutesy "Damn Baby" which finds the boys singing the praises of their lady loves pausing adoringly with the expression "damn baby" throughout the chorus. "Ain't No Law Against That," on the other hand, is a pure fun rocker with pounding guitars without being earth shattering unique in any way.

"Rebels on the Run" lives up to its title--it's a scorching hot Southern rock affair with gears shifted to the overdrive mode often equip with flat picking guitars and overdriven fiddles. Though some of these barnburners could have been stretched lyrically, this is still a solid effort. These rebels definitely are on the run to the top of the charts with this disc.

Montgomery Gentry needs to peruse more songs. This is not ( in my opinion ) one of their best. They need to get back to the roots of country music. Read more
