5.0 out of 5 stars Wow Mothra really rocks in this movie
The reborn Mothra looked very cool and its new powers were totally awesome especially when it broke it self up into thousands of little mothras to attack desghidora.Desghidora itself was an incredible monster that thing looked like it could eat Godzilla and king ghidorah both .I definitelly loved this movie.I can't wait to get Rebirth2.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars...the series gets better with #2
This movie plays more to the kiddies than the Heisei Godzilla series (the 1990's series), so for that reason I must recommend it...it's a very good introduction for young children into the world of kaiju eiga. I actually enjoy it more than "Mothra 1"...it has a plotline that children can follow easily, and young characters that kids can identify with...

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of the giant monster genre, November 5, 2000
This review is from: Rebirth of Mothra Part 1 (Slipsleeve) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Next to Godzilla, Mothra is probably the most popular creature in Toho's ongoing series of giant monster movies. "Rebirth of Mothra" represents a high point in that series. The film is a spectacularly successful blend of action, emotion, music, and mythic imagery.

Although the film is intended towards a family audience--two of the main characters are children, and graphic scenes of human carnage are avoided--there is plenty in here for adult fans of the genre to enjoy. The film is full of stunningly beautiful images that are charged with the power of myth and the elegance of poetry. The opening sequence, for example, sends chills down my spine. And the fight sequences rival a heavyweight boxing match in intensity.

The human actors give fine performances, but the real stars, of course, are the fantastic creatures. The special effects team has done a miraculous job of truly bringing these creatures to life. Mothra, her gargantuan larval offspring, the miniature "fairy Mothra," and the other creatures are fully developed characters who really engage the viewers' emotions. Toshiyuki Watanabe's stirring score is a powerful complement to the epic drama of creation, destruction, and metamorphosis which is enacted by these mythic creatures.

As I noted before, this is a film for all ages. After falling in love with it, I watched the video with my four year old nephew. I don't think I've ever seen a child get so emotionally involved in a film before; he insisted on borrowing the tape and watching it over and over!

Like many film lovers, I am wary of remakes and retreads of the classic films which I loved as a child. And the original "Mothra" was one of my favorites. But fear not, classic Mothra fans: Toho company has produced a new classic which remains true to the spirit of the original while adding to the Mothra mythos. This film is essential viewing for giant monster fans.

This movie plays more to the kiddies than the Heisei Godzilla series (the 1990's series), so for that reason I must recommend it...it's a very good introduction for young children into the world of kaiju eiga. I actually enjoy it more than "Mothra 1"...it has a plotline that children can follow easily, and young characters that kids can identify with. Overall, it's better put together than the first 1990's Mothra movie, without slipping into the pandering to young children that the original Gamera series (as well as the tail end of the Showa Godzilla series) was guilty of. Note to parents: you could do with a lot worse role models than Mothra...for a big bug, this Japanese monster has a lot of good morals!

4.0 out of 5 stars Death Ghirdorah, baby!, July 31, 2000

For some reason, I always thought Mothra has Godzilla beat in so many categories. It actually has a conscience....a soul.....and a much more noble mission. Mothra is the guardian of Earth and nature. The best part of this movie is the awesome foe of Mothra, Death Ghidorah. It looks to me like a more primitive version of King Ghidorah, my favorite Toho movie monster. Death Ghidorah is an evil alien being that travels from planet to planet, absorbing all the energy and leaving the planet dead This greatly resembles the bio of the original Ghidorah from the old Toho movies. It was trapped hundreds of years ago by Mothras but now it's back and it ain't happy! I won't give away too much, but the new Mothra at the end is cool!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great film for kids but not true to the legend of Mothra.., January 19, 2000
This review is from: Rebirth of Mothra Part 1 (Slipsleeve) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This was not a bad film. It's geared for kids and has a pretty good plot as well as some nice special effects.

However, it doesn't really stay true to Mothra, treating her more as a flashy bug than the revered Goddess she once was. The little fairies, Moll and Lora...what can I say about them? Not cute like the Shobijin or enchanting like the Cosmos, plus their costumes were pretty tacky...the traditional Mothra song, however, was sung very nicely.

Mothra's opponent, DeathGhidorah (it isn't DesGhidorah, that was a result of bad dubbing) sounded like an elephant and I thought he was pretty cheesy...but that's me.

I've only seen the dubbed version of this film which could account a bit for my poor opinion of it...but it's really a good movie, overall, and I recommend it for any child, or anyone else for that matter :)

Mothra is back! Well, at least the son(daughter?) of Mothra.......um.....or one of many Mothras.....well, the family tree is complicated. There are too many Mothras. LOL :) Good story line, good morals, and a great monster foe. The ending battle is the best part! Aqua Mothra was AWESOME! I haven't seen part 3 yet but I hear the original Kind Ghidorah returns. I can't wait! Japanese monster movies RULE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mothra vs. Desghidora (Death Ghidora), June 30, 2000
This review is from: Rebirth of Mothra Part 1 (Slipsleeve) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The movie is a little childish at the begining, but the fight sceans between Mothra and Desghidora were awsome! I can't wait for the third one, I hear that that is going to be really awsome! This movie would have been 5 star if it weren't for the parts where they tryed to make it a super long music video.
