Reboots (2012) is the second Speculative Fiction volume in the Stellar Guild series, following Tau Ceti. This volume contains a novelette, a novella, greetings from the series editor, and an introduction to the protege.

These tales are set in a universe where vampires, werewolves and zombies have come out of the closet. Preternaturals are hard to kill, so Norms use them to explore the galaxy. Home Service sends out crews with four vampires, a werewolf and lots of disposable zombies.

Bad Moon Rising by Cody Martin is the novelette. Skinny Jim is a talking zombie. His friend Pete is another. The rest of the Reboots are too stupid to talk.

Fred is the Fur. He was an engineer before being turned and still knows how to fix things. So he directs the zombies in keeping the bought-from-the-lowest-bidder ship running. He is also the vampire's food supply.

The Fangs are the ship officers. Antonio is the Captain. Grigoire is the astrophysicist and Hephaestus is the navigator. Barnabus is the odd man out among the other vampires.

In this story, Jim is holding down Fred while the drainer is taking out his blood. Of course, werewolves generate new blood almost instantly. Yet draining is not comfortable and makes them very hungry afterward.

Fred is cursing Barnabus for his nasty fur jokes. This time, Fred is showing a real talent in his curses. Antonio sneers at Fred for his threats.

Later, Jim and Pete find another zombie torn apart beyond fixing. They are down to the halfway point in stored Reboots. They don't seem to last as long as usual, probably due to the angry Fangs.

This a great book for super natural and space fans. There is a large mix of super natural creatures some many may not have even heard of. The mix of action and campy humor keeps the story entertaining and funny. There is great potential for a series here and I hope it has a sequel.

A perfect summer weekend read - a beloved author, Ms. Lackey and a brand-new young
author to discover, all in a nice, beach friendly paperback.
Really a cute idea and well-executed as well. Both of these authors are great writers and the plots and characters were terrific. Hope there will be another in this series soon.

This book is hilarious - a brilliant take on paranormal/fantasy in space, and how progress both builds the future and destroys the past.
