Avalon Reborn cd Review,
By
This review is from: Reborn (Audio CD)
This is a great cd! This anointed group and cd, will encourage you and lift your spirit. This cd has relevant and good music. The lyrics are great! I also found the music entertaining and it keeps my attention. I like all the songs on this cd unlike other cds I have bought where I only liked one or two songs. You will be blessed. I don't get tired of listening to these songs! They are catchy and great songs by themselves. The songs have great messages. This cd has helped me grow closer to God, grow in my walk/relationship with God, and want to know God in a new way. This is a different sound for Avalon, and I don't know if Avalon will continue with this type of sound in the future. But it is a refreshing, change of pace from their last cds. The music is not too rocky in my opinion even if it sounds a little rockish from the song clips. The "Rockiness" (don't know if that is a word) does not overpower the music. The new members blend really well. Some of the past Avalon members left for various reasons. Jody McBrayer had to leave because of cardiac problems and Melissa Greene left because she felt God had called her to be a music minister and serve at a church. Every person of the current Avalon lineup has a great voice. These are some of the best voices I have heard of or seen anywhere, including cds, concerts, tv specials, etc... They are amazing voices. I do have one thing I wish was added to the cd. I do miss a ballad soulful type song sung by Janna like "When the Time Comes", "Can't Live a Day", "I Don't Want to Go", etc... But the song "Destined" on this cd comes really close. I highly and strongly recommend you buy this cd if you like Contemporary Christian music, or even just good music. This is an enjoyable cd. This is an A+ effort by Avalon. I give it five stars.

I have been a devoted Avalon fan since "In a Different Light." I've adjusted through the member changes, and somehow just kept loving Avalon more and more. I have to say my all time favorite is "Creed." So, I knew this CD would be different - and it is. My first reaction on hearing it was sadness. Don't get me wrong - If it would have had a different artist name on the cover I would have said it was a great CD. But for AVALON (my "pet" group) it was disappointing at first. I like the songs and I like the new "rockier" feel the other reviewers mentioned. However, I simply cannot get over losing the Jody/Janna dynamics - I guess that is what really made the group for me. Sadly, I am afraid the glory days are over for them. I will continue to be a fan (although a somewhat quieter fan) and will enjoy this CD, but it will not make my list of favorites.

A New Avalon,
This review is from: Reborn (Audio CD)
When I inserted the CD into the player I was prepared to hear something new. This is not your fathers Avalon. Compared to the early almost acoustic sound relying on tight harmonies between the singers I find this to be more of a rock feel. This is Avalon in a much more agressive tonal mode. They tight harmonies are there. The singers often trade off lines. The characteristic Avalon sound is present. But this album is one that almost seems to want to expand its audience to those who enjoy a more rock feel to their worship music. The final cut in the album is Holy which I think is destined to become a great worship anthem. If you like an edgy approach to the tonality of your worship music you will love this album. This is certainly Avalon with an edge. I highly recommend it.

I first heard about this group 9-10 years ago. I think they are amazing with a gift that doesn't get as much attention as they could and should. I didn't hear a word about this cd...found it at a Christian store. Keep blessing us with your music Avalon!!

I have followed Avalon since Day 1. I own all of their records. Reborn is their best since Oxygen. My favorite is California, then Reborn, Angels and Fragile.

Reborn or false labor?,
This review is from: Reborn (Audio CD)
To begin, please allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I have been a fan of Avalon since the beginning. While I have enjoyed the powerhouse vocals and engaging melodies of this vocal group, I have also been disappointed from time to time with the lackluster albums that they've released throughout the years. In my personal opinion, "A Maze of Grace" is their best album to date. Back then, the group contained the following members: Jody, Janna, Michael, and Nikki. Over the years, Avalon has gone through a number of lineup changes, some good, and some not so good. Those of you that are skeptical about the departure of Jody and Melissa and the addition of Jeremi and Amy, are in for quite a surprise. I will admit that the vocal styles of the newbie's are quite a bit different from what we've come to expect from members of Avalon. However, their voices add an edgy touch to this new album, which is good, considering the album's darker tone.
This cd kicks off with the title track, "Reborn". This is an outstanding opener that will blow up right in your face. The distorted guitars and driving beat will have you humming the tune long after the track has ended. On this song, we are introduced to Jeremi's smooth vocals, which add a special touch to this song. No, he isn't Jody, but he is a fine vocalist in his own right. Greg's voice also fits this song nicely. The second track is also an upbeat number that talks about feeling "Alive" in Christ. This is a strong track that begins with Janna's incredible voice singing the words, "I don't want to be broken anymore, living life in a million pieces. I can see my world is changing, waking me from my sleeping. I hear you calling, you're speaking my name...and I'll never be the same." "Arise" comes next and it is, without a doubt, the strongest track on the album. Each vocalist takes center stage for a moment in this song, and we are introduced to Amy's edgy vocal style. Comparisons to Melissa are totally unfair to Amy, since their styles are completely different. She sounds good on this song and I think that she makes a good addition to the group. The song itself will encourage you with its brilliant lyrical pattern. It speaks to anyone that may be feeling guilty about their sinful past. Avalon tells you to "Arise" because "there's hope for you through the truth." The fourth track is yet another impressive display of Amy's unique talent. Her voice is incredibly strong as she belts out the words, "I want to feel you crash into my heart. I know you're real, but we are worlds apart. God I've had enough of apathetic love. I want to feel." "Fragile" is an opportunity for Jeremi to step forward and show what he can do, and his vocal fits this song perfectly. The lyrics express our need for the savior's love. "We are fragile we collide. We are broken deep inside. Just one answer in a world gone wrong. We are fragile, but love is strong." On "Destined", Janna delivers an excellent performance as she tells us, "I was destined to love you." This is sure to please Avalon fans with its smooth melody and bold, Christ centered lyrics. Okay, so the first six tracks are really, really, good. So why did I only give the album three stars? The problem begins with track number 7. "Stay" is a good song, but it just doesn't fit the mood of the album. It sounds like it belongs on a Greg Long solo album, which is one of the downsides to him being a part of the group. I liked his solo albums, but I don't purchase Avalon cd's to hear Greg's songs. The rest of the cd is easily forgettable. While there may be some of you out there that will enjoy the last four songs, the vast majority will skip these tracks and restart the cd from the beginning. While this is an impressive effort, Avalon should go back to the drawing board if they're looking to create that perfect album. Sorry Avalon fans, but instead of being "Reborn", you're favorite vocal group may be just experiencing false labor pains. In the end though, this cd is worth the 13$ and it will probably please old and new fans alike. Just don't pop this into your cd player and expect to hear a perfect recording.
