If you are a fan of near future science fiction such as Snow Crash or Daemon, you will absolutely love the Day Eight Series. It is filled with exciting technology, great character development, and can't-put-it-down action. Best of all, it will leave you thinking for weeks afterwards about the nature of the universe. A must read and great novel by Ray Mazza.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling and thought-provoking first part March 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Reborn is an intriguing beginning to what I feel is going to be an awesome ride! Mazza takes a fresh take on the simulated human / AI puzzle and crafts characters I care about. I'm very interested to see where this goes. From the first glimpse of Ezra to Trevor's introduction through his trip down the side of a building, yeah, it's good stuff. If you like early Neil Stephenson, Gibson, or even Crichton, check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars I cannot explain my love for this series..... April 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
From jump street this series was a work of art, and never disappointing the entire time (except for the 2 weeks I had to wait for the final one...) Mazza takes you on an ineradicable journey that covers the entire globe and back, to places that we can only dream about. I really can't write a review on just The Reborn. I have read the entire series, in a very short time, and to be honest, I cannot tell you where the first story actually ends. So with out giving away too much I'm going to tell you about the work as a whole.

Have you ever had a job that promised so much but turned out to be monotonous noting of an existiance? That's Trevor, and he's just getting by day by day. All the man wanted was a few free movies to kill time. Little does he know, that small act of piracy would set him on the path to one of the most amazing stories ever told.

Truth be told, I originally got The first book free via the Lending Library, and I cannot tell you how pleased I was with it. I read "The Reborn" in about 2 days, bought "Of Mice and Hitmen" that afternoon. (Which was my favorite of the 3 ) and finished it that night. Then I waited abit impatiently for about two weeks for the "The Spiritual Singularity" And I literally could not put it down. I went to bed so late last night 3-31-12 that I almost was late for work today. And I couldn't be more pleased. Every word is perfect, and blends the right amount of description with out being to wordy. It's so powerful that I could literally TASTE the air in which he describes.

The ending of "The Reborn" is the perfect cliffhanger that makes you HAVE to buy the second book, and I can tell you that Mazza never ever leaves you thinking "Ehh...."

For $0.99 this book is a steal, I would gladly pay $15.

5.0 out of 5 stars The future of AI? September 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Loved it! I just downloaded the next two books in the series. It's a fast read filled with fantastic ideas about the future of AI. Oh, there's political intrigue, national security issues, and meaning-of-life stuff, too. Can't wait to see where this is going, but I'm afraid some of it is going to break my heart (which is a good thing when reading a great novel.)

So, I have on the table next to me three books by Ray Mazza. These books make up The Day Eight Series. They are self-published and most experienced readers know that a great number of the self-published are fair to middling and I am usually tempted to grade them on a curve, the thought process being, " Well, it's pretty good considering it's a do-it-yourself job and she did it all herself." This is much the same thought process I have when I do handyman work around the house and I proudly show it off to my wife - it's pretty good but certainly not professional.

I let these three books sit on my to-be-read pile for about a month.

Why?

I was not in the mood for, "Well, it's pretty good, considering..."

So, I pick up book one and about 15 pages in I am thinking, "Where is he going with this?" I read the back cover a couple of times and decided to give it a few more pages. Where are the human simulations running on computers? Where's the "catastrophic event" coming from?

By page 35 I decide I kind of like the main character, Trevor Leighton, and I'll ride it out a bit more.

On page 71, we hit pay dirt. My mind is blown. We are introduced to the simulations. Most importantly, we are introduced to how they are developed. Such a simple idea (and complex at the same time). Good sci-fi takes you to new places and shows you some new stuff. Great sci-fi takes what you already know and puts a little tilt to it, a twist that makes you see everything in a new way. It's all the same. It's all different.

Mazza's series is about human beings simulated on a computer. I figure he knows something about this since his bio shows that he has worked on several "Sims" projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars intelligent read September 7, 2012
By jennyj
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got the first book free. That being said I immediately purchased the other two upon completion. Why? Because I was rivited. This is a fast paced sci-fi story about artificial intelligence and the nefarious ways it can be used as well as the lessons we can learn about human emotion from attempting to create an emotive program. I won't ruin the story with details. But if you want to read a tale that will leave you thinking the Day8 series should be your first choice.
