Scientific study of post-NDE, February 21, 2003
This review is from: Reborn in the Light (Mass Market Paperback)
Cherie Sutherland does a survey of 50 Australians who've experienced NDE. In this book, she explores the after-effects of their experiences, and how their lives have changed. Cherie, trained as a sociologist, used her sociology training on interviewing the 50 people to gather data, and making sense of it. She does a great job with the book, and it flows from start to finish very well. She highlights the similarities between the 50 people, and compares it with similar studies done in the U.S.
This book doesn't go in-depth into the NDE experiences themselves, but rather touches on the commonalities of the experiences. The book focuses on the changes in the experiencers life-styles, thoughts, and feelings. I've read many other NDE books, and the changes to her 50 person group are very similar to the others I've read about.
Usually, the most common feeling amongst the NDE survivors is a sense of mission to help the needy and a strong compassion for all life in this world. Also the fear of death is totally eliminated after an NDE. There were two very interesting results from her study: First, Cherie found that marriages were often destroyed by an NDE. Usually due to the significant other's failure to understand the NDE and cope with the changes in life-style. Second, there was an overwhelming rejection of organized religion by the experiencers afterwards. Rather, they felt more spiritual, and felt they had a direct connection to God. Contrary to this from other books I've read, most of the NDE'ers (at least Americans) became more religious afterwards.
Some people might be put off that this book is written like a thesis, or an intellectual study of the NDE phenomena. However, if you are interested in studying post-NDE effects, or reading about how others dealt with their NDE, this book would be invaluable to you.
