Review

This updated book is perfect for any shop, family project, or DIY person. ---Engine Professional, reviewed by Mike Caruso, Oct-Dec. 2008

From the Back Cover

For more than 50 years, the small-block Chevy has ruled the streets–millions of them are out there, powering race cars, muscle cars, street rods, pickups, drag boats, and everything in between. It’s simply the most popular engine ever built. But whether you’re restoring, racing, or cruising, almost every small-block Chevy eventually needs a rebuild. This new VideoBook™ gives you all the information you need–in both book and video form–to rebuild your small-block!

The Book

In this updated and revised edition of the book that’s become the industry standard, the authors show you how to successfully rebuild your small-block Chevy.

Using step-by-step photo sequences (more than 600 photos!) this book covers every step in rebuilding your small-block Chevy: assessing its condition; engine removal; disassembly and inspection; machine work; trial fitting parts; parts cleaning; final assembly; first firing; and break-in.

Along the way, the unique Workbench™ format gives you helpful hints and tips on performance upgrades, including cams, heads, ignition, induction, and more. It also points out problem areas to watch for, professional builder tips, jobs that need special care or special tools, and more. Whether you’re a first-time engine builder or a seasoned professional, this is the ESSENTIAL guide to rebuilding your small-block Chevy.

The DVD

Our VideoBook™ DVD includes step-by-step coverage of a small-block Chevy rebuild, from engine teardown to final assembly. The DVD includes more than two hours of footage, with detailed sections showing how to disassemble a used engine, inspect for signs of damage, select replacement parts, buy machine work, check critical component fit, and much more! All of this is filmed in a bright, professional studio for maximum clarity and detail. The DVD also shows all the work done to the block, crank, rods, and heads at the machine shop, giving you a complete understanding of the process. Computer graphics and animation sequences show operation and assembly of key components. Together, this book and DVD give you the complete picture on how to rebuild your small-block Chevy.

This rare instructional combination package is a must-have for every small-block Chevy fan. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This is a great book and the DVD is even better. Very informative and well illustrated. I have been working on Chevy's for years and rebuilt my share of motors. I always wanted something like this for reference. This would be great for someone who is just learning or intermediate. Get it you won't regret it!

I was impressed with the book and the DVD. As a novice to engine building I was able to follow the DVD and book with relative ease. There were a few areas of the process that are in the book that the DVD did not mention. Overall I think it is a very good tool for the novice like myself.

The book format is great: step-by-step, informative text, big color pictures on every page. The only hesitation I have with this book is the editing errors: wrong photo w/text (Ch. 2 Step #34 & #35), reference to wrong step (Ch. 2 step #51) wrong title (Ch 3 Step 12#), and this is just getting started (haven't gotten into the rest of the book).

The DVD we received within the book was defective - it played for about 2 minutes, right up to the "OK, lets get started" and then the screen would go completely white with a few lines across the bottom. Tried different DVD players, same problem. I e-mailed the publisher (CarTechbooks.com) about the defective disk, and received great support from Nancy K.; she immediately submitted a request for a new disk, and it arrived in my mail about a week afterwards - thanks again Nancy!!

I'm working on this motor rebuild project with my son, teaching him how motors work, and hopefully give him some skills he can rely on later in life. More than once we've had to stop, read the text several times, compare it with what the picture was showing, then determine "what's wrong here" with the book (rather than the motor). Overall the book is a great resource, but it's original publish date was 8 years ago, more than enough time to re-edit and re-publish this step-by-step instruction book with fewer errors.

I have had a few "how to rebuild" books over the years but this is the best I have seen. A bit of a background: I am a 35 year old automotive enthusiast that has been working on old cars all my life. For the past 6 years I have been racing a "pure stock" circle track car with a small block chevy. I have taken heads on and off but never delved into a short block. So I watched the video that came with this book, then used the book when I reassembled it. I am happy to say the rebuild was a success and my Chevy 350 spent many a night running at 7,000+ RPM. Unfortunately it recently seized up due to running without oil. So I bought another copy of the book (I threw the first one away since it had a bunch of oil on it) to rebuild the motor. With the step by step nature of this book, it makes assembling a small block Chevy as easy as possible. It makes it as close to assembling furniture from IKEA as possible. I have faith my next rebuild will be as successful as the first because how easy following this book makes it to rebuild one.

If you are a auto hobbyist / enthusiast planning to rebuild a motor, or just want to know how a motor goes together, this video book is certainly one to have. I have not ventured into a small block myself yet, but this book (along with others) will give me the confidence to start, and presumably will be covered in grease soonafter I begin.

My husband is a street rodder and he builds cars. In fact, he's one of the last of the old timers that still does. He actually requested this book and DVD so I just ordered what he asked for. I think he just wanted to be sure that his memory was still good and that the numbers he had long ago memorized were still correct. In any event, he's had his nose in this book for quite some time. He says its very good and he would know. I highly recommend this to any backyard mechanic or someone who is restoring and older Chevy engine.
