Book Description

June 1, 2004
In all of us there is a gift. Sometimes it is only in our darkest hours that we can finally see the light that shines from within.

Readers will learn how to transform the impact of addiction on their relationships into opportunities for positive personal growth. With the Triple R Healing Model, people recovering from addictions and their loved ones can transcend the chaos of addiction cycles, heal old communication and behavioral dynamics from the addiction, as well as increase their chances of relationship success. Whether you are a partner or a family member of people with addictions or you are in recovery yourself, Rebuilding Relationships In Recovery is the guide you need to start healing your relationships today.

People in early recovery and their loved ones can follow a five stage rebuilding process whereby they work together to heal their relationships impacted by addiction. Individuals can still attend support groups because this program works well with the principles endorsed by Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) or Narcotics Anonymous (N.A.), as well as Al-anon and Nar-anon. The five building blocks of the rebuilding relationships in recovery (Triple R Healing Model) include: Building Block # 1- Realising the impact of addiction on relationships Building Block # 2- Starting the healing process Building Block # 3- Getting rid of unhealthy patterns Building Block # 4- Understanding the effect of a recovery lifestyle Building Block # 5- Connecting in recovery As a result of following this process, individuals learn to move beyond their problems as they heal as well as rebuild their relationships. The disease of addiction does not have to be a cunning, powerful, or baffling monster that threatens to devastate people's happiness. Individuals can live in the solution

This review is from: Rebuilding Relationships in Recovery: A Guide to Healing Relationships Impacted By Addiction (Paperback)
"Rebuilding Relationships in Recovery" is A Guide to Healing Relationships Impacted by Addiction† by Catherine Patterson-Sterling. Catherine is a registered Clinical Counsellor in Vancouver who - as the back cover blurb states - is an international speaker..., she has helped couples and families across the world heal their relationships, develop personal empowerment, as well as find the happiness they deserve.
†† This is an easy to read book in a conversational style, a book that will help each reader. Her choice ot terms for certain behaviours and attitudes is very useful to every WRITER trying to describe characters and motivations. Yes, some writers do have troubled people in their lives from rebellious teens to parents with dementia, even partners with life destroying addictions.
†††† It is a book to taste and savour, followed by hours of consideration for each section. Just decide if any of the 10 types listed here are the way you communicate with your family members: The Warden-Investigator Trap, The Rescuer Trap , The Loner (Ignorer)Trap, The Misery Trap, The Dual Recovery Trap, The Power Imbalance Trap, The Pain Trap, The Kid Gloves Trap, The Emotional Rollercoaster Trap, and The Weakness Trap. Ever wonder why our planned common sense discussions never seem to work as we planned them?
† Catherine uses clear examples from her family and partner case studies showing how both parties need to heal by changing patterns. She has good questionaires and exercises, including 101 ways to develop a playful spirit. Life does not have to be full of emotional power plays. Catherine allows readers to hope that we can change ourselves by adopting to new attitudes and behaviours.
† She knows that expressing our creativity is vital to a healthy life. " In all of us there is a gift. Sometimes it is only in our darkest hours that we can finally see the light that shines from within."
Catherine is a dramatic speaker who is single-handedly changing North American therapists away from the narrow focus on co-dependency as a sick life style. She is a successful self-published author, now selling workbooks and materials for 8 week courses in healing relationships. Writers can make a difference.

This review is from: Rebuilding Relationships in Recovery: A Guide to Healing Relationships Impacted By Addiction (Paperback)
I had the privilege of attending a workshop facilitated by the author and bought the book because of that. It's a wonderful resource for anyone working through the damage wrought by addiction. The thing I like the most is that it gives the people who have been affected by an addict a guide to make some sense of what has happened and how to begin reparing the relationship.
