Better than the original,
This review is from: [REC] 2 (DVD)
Wow. Rarely is a sequel actually better than the original. Especially in the Horror genre where cliches are prevalent and you can't scare people twice with the same tactic. [REC]2 succeeds in all these areas. By introducing more characters, with more action, and more points of view, it surpasses the original. Unlike other "shaky cam" horror movies, [Rec]2 requires the viewer to think after each sequence. Its a great movie. I'll be surprised if the third installment can beat this, although after the huge success of these movies, I think a third is inevitable. This DVD is great. The picture is crystal clear, and the subtitles are perfect. IT IS IN SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES. And the deleted scenes have English subtitles. I've seen other versions of this movie on DVD, and this is the only one with English subtitles on the deleted scenes. And to clear up any remaining confusion, the DVD is NTSC format and all-region so it will play in North America.

I had low expectations story wise for this sequel. I loved the first film. REC 2 takes us through familiar territory for about a half-hour: lots of searching the building. However, there is a religious element to the film that I thought made it more interesting instead of being tacked on. This movie (I state this I think without ruining the film) physiologizes (if that's a word) religious prophecies into an action movie. Very well done. After the religious undertones are established, the plot remains pretty predictable until the last few minutes. The characters again confront the skinny girl from REC using nightvision, but once that scene is established, it takes a surprising and interesting turn.If you liked the first film, you will enjoy this, but I have to say, considering the first half hour of the film moved in the same way REC did, as well as sort-of re-establishing REC's story, seeing REC before seeing REC 2 isn't a must. Still a great film and gets 5 stars from me.

Awesome sequel to a modern horror masterpiece,

Set 15 minutes after the events of the first movie, Dr. Owen (Jonathan Mellor) and a SWAT team group armed with weapons and camera as they search for the blood of the possessed demonic girl that started the whole mess as they want to develope an antidote. However 3 teenagers and a fireman go through the sewer system from outside and are trapped in the building as they all must try to survive from a night of unholy terror as demons are waiting for blood.Nicely made, chilling and gory sequel to 2007's Spanish horror classic "REC", Paco Plaza co-writer and director of the original returns. Yes the acting is over the top and not on par with the first movie, some say this sequel is inferior to the first movie but i disagree as i believe it's as excellent to the original movie which spawned a US remake called "Quarantine". The suspense is well put together and there are some surprises in store including more demons than ever, the ending has a nice twist to it and there are 2 more to go. This movie is presented in Spanish with English subtitles with decent extras like deleted-extended scenes, behind the scenes featurettes, A walkthrough on the set, Press Conference from Spain and REC 2 on tour feature.

Generally I try to avoid sequels now, as they are for the most part ripoffs. Lazy cash-grabs. As for remakes, well, there isn't a good reason to see one unless the filmmaker's do something different with the material or add to it and make it more interesting in some way. But, of course they don't most times. Also it matters which film is being remade! In other words, I don't like sequels and I don't like remakes. There are always exceptions to everything, however, and [REC]2 is an example of a sequel that I enjoyed thoroughly. It manages to be non-stop action but without skimping on story at all. There is plenty of eerie atmosphere and a few jump scares. As a sequel should do, it gives us information about what happened to characters that survived the original and also furthered the story, filling in some of the mystery around the first story. In [REC]2, we follow a group of SWAT team members as they are sent into a quarantined apartment building where a viral outbreak has spread and killed most, turning residents into crazed, violent lunatics. The virus is described as a derivation of rabies. That's about all you should know about the plot going in. I don't want to ruin it for you. Let me say, though, that there are some surprises regarding the virus and it's origins as well as some of the people trying to get in and out of the building and their motives. However, this film does not hinge on plot twists, which is refreshing. The style in which this film was shot is terrific. It's done in much the same way as the first, only BETTER, as they improved their techniques. It's easier to watch, with less shaky, jerking camera and there's more light so you can tell what's happening easier. These things make it scarier and more intense. Also, there are more cameras, as the SWAT members have helmet cams, giving us more points of view, so the film is interesting in that way. Several scenes reminded me of Aliens, as we get to see through each team member's helmet cam with their last name in the upper corner. It's a terrific idea and makes for some high tension moments. This is an intense film with good acting and well-done effects. The story is interesting and I liked it even more than the first movie, which is something I hardly ever say!

Better than expected,

Not being a fan of found footage horror, I was pleasantly surprised by this unassuming sequel to REC, which expands on the original premise and manages to take it in an unexpected direction. While the religious overtones of the film might be hard to swallow for some, it actually worked for me, and a surprise appearance of an unexpected character in the second half represented a welcome departure from formula.Picking up a few hours after the original film left off, we again return to the quarantined tenement building to do battle with "zombies". This time we're led in with a swat team, and it's soon clear that there is more happening here than we initially believed when the man in charge reveals a clerical collar. Ultimately, I was pleasantly surprised with the direction the movie took, even though it is a clear departure from the run of the mill zombie storyline (and from the rabies-centric plot that the American remakes embraced). This movie is better than it should be. I'm looking forward to #3.

Strange....,
This review is from: [Rec] 2 (DVD)
The first movie I saw was "Quarantine", then someone told me to rent the original "[REC]". So I did and I loved it.The I heard about "Quarantine 2" and sure enough there was a "[REC]2" that I had never heard of. It turns out "Q2" has nothing to do whatsoever with "[REC]2". So I rented "R2" and....what a strange way to take the series. I'll say this... The acting was top notch. The direction was excellent. I'm still on the fence about taking the story in this direction. ......SPOILERS.......... I was expecting the movie to go in the rabies direction. "Evil scientist" is in the penthouse creating his "end of the world" virus. And they make it about demonic possession???? Like I said...the story was tense and told well. I was expecting something more along the lines of "28 Weeks Later". I'm giving the film four stars due to the excellent acting. Great direction. Brilliant use of music and sound. But I'm just not really liking the "demonic" direction of the franchise. I liked the rabies direction better. I still liked all the twists and turns the movie took and i recommend it...it's just not what I expected. I look forward to what they do with part 3.

Best horror film in a while,

For a while I've been ready for the documentary-style horror genre to go away - what was once novel is now cliche - but with REC2 I can forget that for a moment, because it's so damn good. I like that it takes the story in a totally different direction, casting the events of the first film in a new light, without ruining things. It's not one of those sequels that makes me lose respect for the original film.I'm sure people will complain that you can see the ending coming from a mile away, and it's true, but I don't care. It's a horror movie, after all...we're lucky to get any plot at all. The whole thing is well done, intense and fun to watch. (But I hope there's not a REC3...quit while you're ahead, filmmakers!)

I was worried about a sequel being made for REC at first since sequels tend to fall far short of what their predecessors managed to pull off, but REC2 is one of those rare types that actually deliver what they promise, and what was promised in this case was something truly refreshing to the zombie/viral outbreak sub-genre.There have been countless well made movies that have used the basic plot structure and become classics in the eyes of many. However the truth is undeniable; the structure cannot be expected to last forever no matter how effective it has been in the past, so sooner or later it is going to become stale and movies following it to the letter will never stand out on thier own. REC2 removes itself from what is expected and instead treads into new territory that helps avoid the "been-there, done-that" type of reaction from viewers. There are some individual characteristics that are sort of shared in between here and there, but REC2 combined ideas and themes from seveal types of movies an it ended up presenting them in an intelligent way that none of them had really been used before on their own in the manner. The product has evolved into something completely different in its own right while maintaining just enough balance for things to remain intresting and within some sense of believability. Quarantine fell victim to the use of cliches that we have mostly seen before, it gave us an explanation surrounding the chaos that prevented it from becoming a memorable film. It left cliches to remain cliches and unfortunately originallity is an aspect that is equally important for any film to be if the people making it truly want it to be successful and not catagorized as just another clone nowadays. Hopefully any additional REC films will be thought out as well as these two have been because so far they seem to have made it past the dreaded hurdle that so many other sequels have failed to get over.
