I have a different take on this offering from Steve Miller Band. I have to say that both production and artistry on this make it a must have for any connoisseur of the burgeoning rock scene. The acoustic numbers are superb! I had the LP and burned it to CD. Miller was probably at his most creative here as some of his "hits" later prove.

Somewhere along the way from the early 70's I lost my original vinyl copy of this record. I had searched for reissues on CD for several years but began to despair that I would not be able to replace the MIA vinyl. This is not one of the 100 greatest albums of all time, but for someone who cut their teeth on late 60's, early 70's music it's a record that you can become very attached to.

At least it's better than "Rock Love",

The second of the Steve Miller Band's out-of-print albums available for downloading is definitely better than the previous year's 'Rock Love' (even though I gave it the same rating) but is still no masterpiece. It's not that there are any mediocre songs here but there's really no great ones either. Miller was in a weird place in his career at the time. His early, San Francisco audience (who never really bought his LPs enough to make Steve a rich man in the late '60s/early '70s) had left him for other artists and the mega sales he would soon garner hadn't kicked in yet either so this album is from a sort of limbo I bet he'd just as soon forget.
Sound quality is average (not remastered or anything) and they only used one song ("Journey from Eden") for the 'Anthology' LP which came out soon after so unless you're really jonesing for some Steve Miller Band you've never heard I can't say you really need this. |
