europop remixes of some great songs,
By
This review is from: Recall (Audio CD)
Produced and remixed by Sascha Konietzko, Bill Rieflin and Tim Skold with Peter Murphy, this EP attempts to modernize what I think are two songs that are fairly close to perfect - Roll Call and Indigo Eyes. My problem with most "remixes" is that they don't wander too far from the original, while these songs are completely new and engaging. Gone is some of the fire, but the infusion of euro techno pop and dance beats is interesting and worth owning.
The three new songs are mediocre at best. Big Love is a ballad with added techno beats and sound effects. I like it, but its not a standout. Surrendered is a bit melodramatic, while Big and Tiny is obviously heavily influenced by the adult contemporary path Peter seemed to be going down on his last couple albums. This is where it began. I was hoping for something different on the vinyl release of this EP, but its the same tracks as this cd.

'Everybody's born surrendered',

This was actually the first solo Peter Murphy album I bought. This was recorded on the heels of the amazing Bauhaus reunion tour. Recorded with some cats from Skinny Puppy, Recall takes a drastic turn musically, featuring mostly electronic music and practically no actual playing of instruments. In great contrast to the rest of the EP is the final all acoustic track 'Big and Tiny' live. Then, after a moment of silence, Peter sings a haunting rendition of the song 'Cool Cool Breeze'. A song which I have read was recorded but left unfinished for an earlier album, Holy Smoke I believe. Electronic versions of 'Rollcall' and 'Indigo Eyes' start off this tragically short release. As an EP it makes a great inexpensive introduction to a truly magnificent voice, although this doesn't accurately represent the music on any of his other releases.

OH PETER I LOVE YOU,

This little cd is quite a gem. I really enjoyed all the songs, finding the remake of "Indigo Eyes" especially interesting. The wonderful new song "Surrendered" is so amazing I did not think I was going to be able to turn it off. It alone is worth the price of the cd. On a more practical note, do not be too fast to turn off your cd after the last song. I was and so it took me about 6 months to realize that there is a hidden song "Cool Cool Breeze" after it.

Who would have thought that the unparalleled baritone Peter Murphy would team up with the electronic wizardry of KMFDM to create such a beautifully haunting, comforting soundscape on RECALL? This surprising collaboration evolves off the heels of the recent Bauhaus tour, which reunited the members of Love and Rockets with their sagacious, melodic compatriot, Murphy. Naysayers say what they want. The boys did make some cash. Simultaneously they brought blissful listening pleasure to an audience near starved for quality rock. RECALL mostly reinvigorates classic Murphy tunes in the meaty synth vein of the aforementioned industrial pioneers, KMFDM. Inspiring lyrics and rifts that integrate mystical Indian textures elevate RECALL's tunes to a realm far beyond the usual genres of music. With so much time off since CASCADE, RECALL, a teaser sent from Red Ant, begs the obvious question: When will we get a full length release of new material from this seminal artist? Doesn't he know that many souls rely on his output?

Wow. When I heard the guys in KMFDM were teaming up with Peter, I was shocked and puzzled. I love both of their works, but all I could think of was "A Drug Against War" with Peter's brooding vocals. I couldn't have been more wrong.Peter hasn't changed at all; he's still sensuous, brooding and powerful. What has adapted is the things coming from Sascha K, Tim Skold and Bill Reiflin. Rather than jackhammer beats and scorching guitars, they show true mastery of the musical domain. Anyone can make music; it takes talent to make music that works. And this does. The loops (like that on "Indigo Eyes") suck the listener in, and there is even an acoustic song. All i can hope for is a full length soon

A couple good songs,

The re-workings of Indigo Eyes and Roll Call are throw-aways; I can't imagine a situation where you'd want to listen to the re-works rather than the originals.
Surrendered is pretty good, but nothing to go too far out of your way for. Big Love of a Tiny Fool (and its acoustic version in Big and Tiny) is great! Definitely makes the EP worth spending a few bucks on. (While track 5 is Live, I couldn't hear any distracting audience noises. Though after the vox+guitar song ends at 3:42, there is plodding a voice-only track that does less than nothing for me.) (For reference: I'm a long-time fan of the entire Bauhaus family, who generally enjoys rock that is off-beat, but needs to be at least a bit melodic.)

disappointment,

After the rise in quality with each successive album(Yes, I did like Holy Smoke!)from ...World to the brilliant Cascade, this EP was a huge disappointment! The remakes are a desecration of the originals. Peter Murphy has long been one of my favorite artists.I await the next release with trepidation.

...and you are not missing much. This EP of two unnecessary remakes and bland new material is a good indication that this man who was once an idol for the young, gpd-help-me-i'm-so-alternative generation hasn't much juice left in him. Yet he is still trying to squeeze things out and this CD is what came out.The new versions of Roll Call and Indigo eyes do not add, improve or give an interesting new take on the originals. The music sounds canned. If anything, this EP is an experiment with synthetic music. "Surrendered" is probably the best track that this has to offer, which isn't saying much. It is a quiet tune and you can hear every word Peter sings, which is a problem because the lyrics are just nonsense trying to pass as words of wisdom and spirituality. As demonstrated in previous songs such as "Socrates the Python" and "Devil's Teeth" Peter merely recites names and stuff he's read in books rather than expressing any insights that are his own. Maybe a 17-year-old gothboy will be impressed by this CD. |
