Book Description

August 6, 2007
GREED * POWER * MONEY * POLITICS Fed up with business as usual, Californians recalled Governor Gray Davis in 2003 and replaced him with a celebrity who pledged to clean up government. The Recall's Broken Promise details how Arnold Schwarzenegger then shattered political fundraising records, attacked campaign finance restrictions, crossed ethical boundaries, and how politicians of both parties have killed needed reforms.

Editorial Reviews

Review

No wonder Arnold spent all those years in the gym--he knew there'd come a time when he d be lifting all that special interest money in Sacramento! This book lifts the rug in the governor's office to show that Big Money still rules in California politics. --Jim Hightower, author, radio commentator, and publisher of The Hightower Lowdown

The price of power is highest in California, site of the most expensive elections in the nation, where powerful interests have had a stranglehold for decades. So when a former bodybuilder and actor celebrity publicly promised not to become entangled with those special interests, it frankly had a hollow ring. And sure enough, in his first term as governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger was no Terminator when it comes to smarmy insiderism and big money politics as usual. These issues are historic and systemic, as campaign finance expert and nonpartisan reformer Derek Cressman explains in this important book, and he has informed, thoughtful ideas about how citizens can help tame the beast of corruption. --Chuck Lewis, Founder of the Center for Public Integrity

A no-holds barred exposé of how powerful interests use campaign contributions, lavish gifts from lobbyists, and outright deception to take over the government of the world's sixth largest economy. Cressman also points readers to the tools they need to start taking back our government. --Peter Coyote, actor/author

5.0 out of 5 stars A bitingly insightful look at the corruption weakening California's governmental system, November 4, 2007
This review is from: The Recall's Broken Promise: How Big Money Still Runs California Politics (Paperback)
Consultant and founder of the nonpartisan watchdog organization TheRestofUs.org Derek Cressman offers his unvarnished insights in The Recall's Broken Promise: How Big Money Still Runs California Politics, a no-nonsense denouncement of the increasingly blurry ethics of California's partisan politics. Chapter cover the events of California's historic recall election, Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise to power, and the ultimate disappointment as big money politics continued as usual. A bitingly insightful look at the corruption weakening California's governmental system, and the reforms that are needed immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book, September 1, 2007

For anyone interested in California politics or campaign finance reform, this is a great read. Cressman approaches a complex topic in a very readable way. I was fascinated to learn more about how our campaign finance system really works, along with all the problems that accompany it. The author makes a great pitch for why we need some real reform, and he concludes the book with some practical ideas of how to fix the system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite a remarkable book, December 28, 2007
This review is from: The Recall's Broken Promise: How Big Money Still Runs California Politics (Paperback)
As this book comments, "Donors Sign Checks, Arnold SIgns Bills." It is a thoroughly researched look at how Arnold raised money for his campaigns, and the favors that he did for his contributors.
I was quite amazed that this book was written while Arnold is still in office- usually a book like this would take many years to research and assemble.
I enjoyed it because I am interested in California politics and also campaign finance reform, and corruption.
