Boys, jokes, and chases are an appealing combination that most boys (or
shonen) look for when they are reading
manga. Kye works them all into this story of JD, a carefree lad who hopes to become the best magician he can (mainly so he can use all the cool gear). When his demanding but loving grandfather (his only family) turns out to be an exiled master-class magician and assassins start dropping out of the sky, JD's world blows apart._Then the other shoe drops: JD may be more magical than human, and with no one to help him figure out his destiny, he ends up running for his life. The plot seems silly but standard at the outset, although it grows more complex as danger and chaos erupt. Energetic art, particularly the fluid characters and spell-casting design, adds a lot to the atmosphere, and the snappy dialogue and goofy slapstick will keep action fans happy. Not a groundbreaking story but a solid new title for
manga fans.
