Receiving Transmission,
By Luke (Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Receiving Transmission (Audio CD)
No brave new direction for One Dollar Short on this one. The group continues it's love affair with the Ataris' sound, and their lyrics still revolve around losing everything that there is to lose. The fist single, `Some Assembly Required', isn't bad, it's fast and heavy enough to hold my attention, as are `Mayakovsky had a gun' and `Engines Failed', but the rest is so slow and similar that it gets very old very quickly. The intros to most of the songs actually sound quite promising, but somehow all is lost by about the middle of the song, where the band usually bursts into a slow emotional chorus. One selling point is that Receiving Transmission comes with a limited bonus disc containing some b-sides from past releases. This bonus disc is actually quite listenable due to the fact that there is more variation in the songs, the highlight being a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes style cover of Casey Chambers' `Am I not pretty enough?' Though in some parts Receiving Transmission is a little more up-beat, and perhaps slightly heavier than One Dollar Short's past releases, ultimately it seems that there is just not enough progression in their music to gain any new fans, or even to hold old ones. This is a real shame too, as the band is so great live. My advice is to forget the CD and spend your money on a ticket to one of their shows.
