The cytochalasans are a class of mould metabolites first isolated in 1966. They show interesting antibiotic properties and produce unusual effects on cell structure and function. Although they are generally too toxic for human clinical use, they have been extensively employed in biochemical research and their complex and difficult chemistry has been the subject of much research.
