Biography

In a cluttered home studio in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, mere blocks from where he wrote “Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites”, the song that sold millions of copies and helped instigate one of the largest shifts in modern American music in recent memory, the galvanizing totem of a youth movement daps at a midi controller, ceaselessly cuing the same snare sound over ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Different is not bad, different is good. March 25, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I get the sense this is a polarizing album from reading other reviews, and the pitchfork review conveyed disappointment. However, I think this is an amazing album and if you are a Skrillex fan you should not hesitate to buy it. I have almost all of the Skrillex EPs and remixes and recognize this album represents a step in a new direction, but change is good. Skrillex avoids becoming formulaic, or a self-parody, and provides a lot of variety on this album. Every song on this album can stand on its own and it is a fun high energy listen.

I am hoping Skrillex will continue to evolve his sound, because I think that can only prolong his career and will keep things fresh. That said, I get the sense that making music is unpredictable and not every album can be a breakthrough or a become a new favorite. Recess isn't Bangarang, but that doesn't mean it is void of entertainment. Skrillex has set a very high bar, no doubt, so this album might not meet expectations in some ears, but don't let expectations get in the way of some fun. This album has some awesome highs and is solid throughout.

I have listened through this album multiple times and here are a few impressions about individual songs:

Most Epic (Scary Monstersish)...
All is Fair In Love and Brostep
Try it Out

More catchy tunes with big drops...
Recess
Ragga Bomb
Ease My Mind

Like the music playing in an elevator ride taken in the middle of a chase scene from some generic action-comedy...
Doompy Poomp

A Kpop collaboration that would make Psy jealous...
Dirty Vibe

4.0 out of 5 stars 90's era music mixed with dubstep. March 19, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Title line says it best. This LP is probably not for the hardcore dub or electric crowd. But if you were listening to music during the 90's and remember those electric or techno remixes that had hip hop flavor and was only played on independent radio channels. Then this LP is for you! Skrillex remembers where the sound came from and this LP is like a throwback to those times. This sound was hard pressed to find back then and even now. And to anybody who knows hip hop knows FATMAN SCOOP voice immediately on the track Recess! Thanks for the tribute to a sound that STARTED DUBSTEP! Remember the bass sound (808) came from rap and hip hop! So get the LP, listen and take a trip down memory lane!

5.0 out of 5 stars New direction with some old skool flava. March 18, 2014
By _thon
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I'll let others who care about their opinions being heard wax poetic about their feelings on the album. Too many people try to pigeonhole this style of music into different sub-genres and then scream when the artist deviates from that style. I enjoyed this album. Skrillex fans and non-Skrillex fans will enjoy this new album....Brostep, Dubstep, Blahblahstep, Derpstep....call it what you want....it's a good listen and fun to dance to. Just listen to it and buy it if you like it. Don't hate. If you don't like it, look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars I hope it grows on me! April 28, 2014
By Evy G
Format:Audio CD
I got really excited to hear this album because I purchased the soundtrack to Divergent and LOVED "Stranger." When I listened to this, out of the whole album, I think I liked 2 or 3 of the songs overall. I wanted to LOVE this album, because I love everything else Skrillex has produced, but so far, eh.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved almost all of it! May 3, 2014
Format:Audio CD
All around great! The music on here is a little bit different sound wise compared to bangarang and scary monsters. Skrillex changed his style a bit but his old sound can still be heard in the album. although to me, there are some fillers(Or maybe songs I just don't like)

All is fair in love and brostep: This is the old skrillex we came to love

Recess: this has more of a house-y feel and there is a slight resemblance to Animals by M.G.

Stranger: starts off slow but the drop is amazing, sadly skrill seems to get lazy with the wubs so I only play the first drop when djing

Try it out: This was already released before the new album but its still good. I didn't listen to it when it came out so it was new to me

Coast is clear: Not crazy about this song, the notes, the drums, the lyrics "do you wanna ___" said every 5 seconds. Really Chance?

Dirty Vibe: This is skrillex and diplo in one song. Most likely formed after performing together as Jack U, Skrill explores his trap side and the end result is great.

Ragga Bomb: this has a gritty drop and resembles one of skrillex's earlier songs. Great song!

Doompy Poomp: used for the skrillex x miska clothing collab. it's a strangely great song but was it necessary to put on recess?

___ That: this resembles dog blood to me, I like the sound though

Ease My Mind :Skrillex uses middle eastern beats for the drop, which to me, sounds good. Kinda like Get Low by Dillon francis

Fire Away: With Skrillex, the last song on the album(or at least one song) is sad and depressing, this one is supposed to be, but its
just sort of an awkward end.

Over all I loved the album, I recommend it to any skrillex fan, Skrillex is putting himself out there and trying new sounds. You can only have so many drops in one type of music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overall disappointing March 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm being pretty generous by giving it 3 stars instead of 2. I'm going to give it a few more listens and give it a chance to grow on me. Afterall, I'm a huge fan of Bangarang and Scary Monsters and the sound quality is good. I just think it sounds uninspired and overall lacking of emotion. Skrillex had so many people help work on the album that it's almost like he lost his identity and dumbed himself down to mediocre level. In most dubstep songs, the vocals are not the focal point but too many songs on Recess are weighed down with vocals. Many of the vocals are just plain annoying, as well. Profanity doesn't usually bug me but a lot of it on this album just seems pointless and elementary. This may be the next big album for a high school party but I think we've all came to expect more than that from Skrillex. I admit, I only listened to a few samples before I bought the album but I didn't think I would need to thoroughly check it out first. At this point, I'd rather just have my money back. I won't make the same mistake on his next album.

What happened? Bad new direction Skrillex. I found this album boring unlike most of his stuff that inspires me and gets me moving. This is just blah. Next.

Skrillex's New Style?
Knowing Sonny, I'm pretty sure this is a lot of experimentation and finished WIPs.
