Biography

In a cluttered home studio in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, mere blocks from where he wrote “Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites”, the song that sold millions of copies and helped instigate one of the largest shifts in modern American music in recent memory, the galvanizing totem of a youth movement daps at a midi controller, ceaselessly cuing the same snare sound over ... Overall this is a very good album, skrillex is diversifying his sound and so far it sounds good to me.

I'm all for artists evolving their sound, and again, this isn't a bad album.

I get the sense this is a polarizing album from reading other reviews, and the pitchfork review conveyed disappointment. However, I think this is an amazing album and if you are a Skrillex fan you should not hesitate to buy it. I have almost all of the Skrillex EPs and remixes and recognize this album represents a step in a new direction, but change is good. Skrillex avoids becoming formulaic, or a self-parody, and provides a lot of variety on this album. Every song on this album can stand on its own and it is a fun high energy listen.

I am hoping Skrillex will continue to evolve his sound, because I think that can only prolong his career and will keep things fresh. That said, I get the sense that making music is unpredictable and not every album can be a breakthrough or a become a new favorite. Recess isn't Bangarang, but that doesn't mean it is void of entertainment. Skrillex has set a very high bar, no doubt, so this album might not meet expectations in some ears, but don't let expectations get in the way of some fun. This album has some awesome highs and is solid throughout.

I have listened through this album multiple times and here are a few impressions about individual songs:

Most Epic (Scary Monstersish)...
All is Fair In Love and Brostep
Try it Out

More catchy tunes with big drops...
Recess
Ragga Bomb
Ease My Mind

Like the music playing in an elevator ride taken in the middle of a chase scene from some generic action-comedy...
Doompy Poomp

A Kpop collaboration that would make Psy jealous...
Dirty Vibe

I'll let others who care about their opinions being heard wax poetic about their feelings on the album. Too many people try to pigeonhole this style of music into different sub-genres and then scream when the artist deviates from that style. I enjoyed this album. Skrillex fans and non-Skrillex fans will enjoy this new album....Brostep, Dubstep, Blahblahstep, Derpstep....call it what you want....it's a good listen and fun to dance to. Just listen to it and buy it if you like it. Don't hate. If you don't like it, look elsewhere.

Title line says it best. This LP is probably not for the hardcore dub or electric crowd. But if you were listening to music during the 90's and remember those electric or techno remixes that had hip hop flavor and was only played on independent radio channels. Then this LP is for you! Skrillex remembers where the sound came from and this LP is like a throwback to those times. This sound was hard pressed to find back then and even now. And to anybody who knows hip hop knows FATMAN SCOOP voice immediately on the track Recess! Thanks for the tribute to a sound that STARTED DUBSTEP! Remember the bass sound (808) came from rap and hip hop! So get the LP, listen and take a trip down memory lane!

Awesome, diffrent from before, but no body does it better than skrillex, all these one star haters, need to move one,it can't always be the same as before, otherwise it gets boring. I mean I'd buy the album just for Try it Out .Stranger is a awesome song.

Recess is an interesting departure from the typical Skrillex music we're used to. That's not a bad thing at all because the album has a lot of tight songs. I'd recommend listening to the songs first (on YouTube maybe) before you buy so you get a feel for the album because if you're expecting something like Bangarang, you may feel let down.

It's not my favorite Skrillex album but it's a fun one to listen to once in a while.

Loved his first few albums. This is far removed from what I have come to know as his style. I realize music is always changing, but this was a big change. Felt more like a rap/reggae album than dubstep. I'm used to a hard hitting, bass thumping unique sound. There a couple awesome songs, just not what I expected. I usually just put in the disc or boot up an mp3 playlist and listen to the whole album I found myself skipping over most of the tracks to get to the good ones. All but two of the tracks are "with" so and so. Like I said some really good tracks like, All is fair, Coast is Clear, and Ragga Bomb, just not up to par with Skrills usual quality. Over all just kind of meh. Where is Syra? Feels like a studio forced this album on him to showcase these other artist's. "Hey Bob, Skrills is hot!". "Yea man, he is.". "Let's try to push some of these other guys we've signed using Skrillex's album.". "AWESOME idea!".

Skrillex's New Style?
Knowing Sonny, I'm pretty sure this is a lot of experimentation and finished WIPs.
