Realistic Recess!,

This review is from: Recess at 20 Below (Hardcover)
I shared this book with my grandson's second grade class and left it for the students to read during recreational reading. They all wanted a closer look! The colorful photos and snappy text bring this recess experience to life for kids, parents, and grandparents. As a former teacher, I could relate to all the preparation required for sending children outside on a nippy day. It is obvious this author has authentic background as a teacher in Alaska.

Cindy Lou Takes You To A Winter Wonderland,
By
This review is from: Recess at 20 Below (Hardcover)
The author transports young and old alike to beautiful and snowy Alaska through the eyes of her students. Readers will experience the frost and snow as her students bundle up and frolic in a winter wonderland during their recess. Beautiful images and words abound in this lovely book. It makes me want to be a child again... and hear the crunch of the snow under my feet. This is a great book to share with children of all ages. I highly recommend this book for teachers, parents and children.

This book was so much fun to read!! Schools will love showing classes what other kids their own age do for recess. The author uses the greatest quotes from kids to truly capture, in kid friendly language, how the kids do it! We laughed our heads off... froze snot!

Ms. Aillaud has wriiten a sweet story to go along with her magnificent photographs. I got cold looking at some of them. This book is a must for anyone who loves Alaska, snow, or recess. This little gem will be loved by children and adults alike. All school libraries should have one!!

I teach 4th grade in an urban school in the south; 50 degrees F is too cold for us. My class and I found this book amazing. We couldn't believe how different recess in winter Alaska is from winter Memphis. The photographs conjure images that plop the reader in the snow and living a very different life from what s/he is lives outside of the book. I highly recommend this book!

I bought this book for my sons' teachers, as our school has a policy that the kids can't go outside if the windchill is below 25 F !! We all think that's silly, and I ran across this book title as I was researching if it was really a NY state law.... (from what I can tell, each school sets it's policy-- there's no law). But it's also a great introduction to life in Alaska, at least a little bit about school.

I live in Istanbul, but my aunt and uncle live in Alaska, and my adult cousins attended the school in this book.
My 9 year old ESL student was recently sent a copy of Reccess at 20 Below as a gift. We both enjoyed it a lot, and I'm visiting Amazon right now to buy a copy to keep. I'm supposedly buying it for my ESL students, but I'm sure I'll sneak in a few more reads of it myself, too! This book is entertainly written, really held our attention, and features beautiful photos. My urban student has rarely seen temperatures below freezing, so he was mesmerized by photos of snow-covered playground equipment, frozen hair and eyelashes, and moose grazing outside the school. I'm sure he'll take his copy to school to share, and I know it'll be a huge hit.

Lots of fun!,
This review is from: Recess at 20 Below (Paperback)
Recess at 20 Below I loved this book. I thought the book was well written and creative. The photographs are fun and colorful. You can see the wonder and enjoyment of winter in the children's faces. In one part of the story you see a moose eating from the bushes on the edge of the playgound. The children watch the moose, with amazement, from inside their school. It makes me want to get bundled up and go out to play with them.

I first saw this book in the UAF bookstore and couldn't put it down! I had a great time showing my daughters what life was like for me when I was a little girl growing up in Central Alaska (Nenana). The photos are wonderful, especially the frosty eyelashes, hair and pink cheeks! Its a wonderful way to share Alaska life from a child's point of view. Though I dont remember our school cancelling recess if it was MORE than 20 below!
