5.0 out of 5 stars I did our daughter's wedding feast from this book!
This is the best collection of delectable recipes EVER! I depend on it for everything now. The first recipe I tried was the cheesecake, and my husband looked at me and said: "to die for." The pecan pie is without equal. I prepared the food for 250 guests after our daughter's wedding, and every recipe came from this book. The chocolate raspberry truffle brownies...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that impressive
The reviews I read in order to choose this book made it seem like the people who wrote it used the best of the best recipes from regional cook books. This does not seem like the case, however, because most recipes are real hokey, and are only from books representing about 10 states. Some of the recipes are good, but I wouldn't gift it, or anything.

The chocolate raspberry truffle brownies were the biggest hit! The finger foods were wonderful! The thing that cooks will like the best is that they can be assured that every single recipe will turn out great--that they've all been tested and chosen as winners. No more leafing through and trying to decide IF something will be a praisworthy dish; now you KNOW! Love this book!

The perfect book for a single person (especially a male) and a great book for a family looking for tasty meals that appeal to everyone. I was able to make dishes (like gumbo & beef stew) that I never would have tried without this book. The editors have done a wonderful job making the recipes easy to follow and each one is a true winner!!! They are truly Hall of Fame caliber.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Recipes are delicious and SO easy to make!!!!, October 21, 1999

This review is from: The Recipe Hall of Fame Cookbook: Winning Recipes from Hometown America (Ring-bound)
I absolutely love this cookbook. My husband has even started cooking since I bought this cookbook. He even reads it in bed!!! The great thing about this cookbook is that ALL of the recipes are delicious. I have other cookbooks that I only use one or two of the recipes but I have already used about 10 of the recipes in this book. I love the Wild Rice Casserole. It's delicious and SO easy to make; I made it Sunday afternnon, froze it and then just popped it in the oven Thursday night. My husband loves to cook breakfast and the whole family loved the Peach French Toast. I would reccommend this cookbook to anyone who likes to eat and cook delicious food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware, February 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Recipe Hall of Fame Cookbook: Winning Recipes from Hometown America (Ring-bound)
I have reviewed every recipe in this book. They all are quite simple and am sure they are delicious. I rated this book with 5 stars for "delicious". This book harks back to a time when America was much more active. 95% of these recipes contain pints of cream, cups of oil, butter, sour cream, bacon, and sugar. Fat makes everything great. If you need great recipes for special occasions that are easy to prepare, buy this book. If you made these a part of your every day diet, if you have high blood pressure, and or are obese, it would probably take years off your life. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Fantastic recipes for all types of tastebuds. The ingredients are already in your kitchen. Cook to entertain, or cook for yourself. Either way, you and your family and friends will be pleased. I especially like the desserts. They're easy to prepare and look beautiful, just as though they were professionally prepared.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is truly the Best of the Best, April 21, 2000

The Death by Chocolate recipe in this book is worth the price alone! This recipe is awesome. I made it as dessert for our Christmas dinner and it was a hit. My husband and 3 yr old son devoured the leftovers the next day. I told my husband I was making it again for a holiday party coming up soon and he is counting down the days. If you love chocolate this IS your dessert and your family and friends will beg you to make it again and again.

This book is a great book for the budding chef or the experienced culinare. I bought it for my wife because she wanted to learn to cook more american dishes. she is IMO not very experienced at being a careful cook. We have tried 5 recipes from this book and they have all been repeat hits for my family. The recipes ARE easy to make, no complex instructions and they All seem to be delicious. there are various categories to choose from and something that everyone will enjoy. this is not a picturesque step by step book like more extensive volumes which i have read. but the instructions are so easy that it needs no more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Great Cookbook!!!, July 27, 2005
This review is from: The Recipe Hall of Fame Cookbook: Winning Recipes from Hometown America (Ring-bound)
I received this cookbook as a wedding gift, and I think it has been the one thing I have used over and over. I have yet to make a recipe from this cookbook that is "average." If you make nothing else, the Applebarn Fresh Apple Cake is worth the price of this book. I need to buy a second volume because the original is wearing out!

I would describe this cookbook as fun. The recipes span a vast range, as they are collected from different cookbooks from across America. I've created MANY of the recipes over the last few years and have loved all of them. As one reviewer mentioned, most recipes are not for the calorie concious. But then, it doesn't say it is the Light Recipe Hall of Fame, now does it? Most recipes are what I call home-cooking type recipes, with a several A+ restaurant quality recipes (like the Crab Bisque on pg 69). The best part is that most are very easy to make.

This is not elegant French cuisine or elegant cooking of any other type, but it is THE BEST church-basement, homey, pot-luck supper, midWestern style cooking collection of recipes I've ever had the pleasure of finding. I recommend it with one tiny reservation, that tiny reservation being that some of the recipes forget that spices don't begin and end with salt and pepper, there are others available now. Otherwise, it is a terrific book, worth far more than the trivial price.
