Editorial Reviews

Review

"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream" are lyrics many kids can be heard saying on any given summer day. This book presents 52 frozen dessert recipes appropriate for the entire year. Sampson (Throw Me a Bone) has written numerous other books in this series; she's also a senior writer for Cooks Illustrated and was nominated for the James Beard Award. Her concoctions range from the classic store-bought French Vanilla to the exotic Avocado Gelato, Grape-Nuts® Ice Cream, or an Orange Granita. Each recipe contains a clear ingredient list, step-by-step directions, and often a beautiful photograph of the treat. Each week one could sample a new ice cream, progressing through the seasons (though eggnog ice cream is listed halfway through), as the recipes are listed to take advantage of spring and summer fruits and later hearty nuts and heavenly chocolates. Sure to fly off the summer display shelves when accompanied by other summer food favorites such as grilling, this text is a solid collection of unique frozen treats.

From the Inside Flap

When it's time for something sweet, a dish of ice cream is hard to beat. Now, with this irresistible little cookbook and a home ice cream maker, you can enjoy a different frozen treat every week—a whole year's worth of recipes for ice cream, sorbet, gelato, and granita.

Author Sally Sampson gives you standout recipes for classic flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry as well as peren-nial favorites like rocky road and pecan. But most of her flavors are deliciously different—taste sensations that will take you well beyond even Ben & Jerry's and HÄagen-Dazs. You can cool down with a refreshing Grapefruit Sorbet or Fresh Peach & Marcona Almond Gelato. Indulge yourself with German Chocolate Ice Cream or Triple Coconut Ice Cream. Or tantalize your taste buds with intriguing flavors such as Fresh Fig Gelato with Orange and Cinnamon, Saffron Ice Cream, and Basil Gelato.

Illustrated with beautiful color photo-graphs and featuring suggested add-ins and accompaniments for almost every recipe, Recipe of the Week: Ice Cream offers an ever-changing calendar of frozen delights. It's just what you need to keep your friends and family screaming for more, week after week.

Some of the recipes in this book are very unusual....saffron ice cream, balsamic and black pepper gelato, fresh fig gelato with orange and cinnamon.

Sally Sampson's newest cookbook, Recipe of the Week: Ice Cream, is going to get me into a lot of trouble. Specifically, trouble with buttons not closing, pants not fitting, and no-doubt many a ruined appetite for dinner. Ice cream is my Achilles heel. I walk by the neatly frozen pints in the freezer case with a hangdog expression of thinly concealed lust. I know I shouldn't have it, but everyone has to break the rules sometime and that's where SaIly comes in.

I admire the simplicity of this book on so many levels. Sampson finds no need to wax poetic on the merits of ice cream -- we, as her consumers, know that ice cream is phenomenal on an inherently addictive level so on with the show. And oh what a show it is! All of the frozen treat bases are covered from custard based ice creams to gellatos, sorbets, and granitas. If that isn't enough to peak your interest, how about the thought of one of these tempting flavors waiting for you in a big cold bowl: Graham Cracker Malted Vanilla Ice Cream, Triple Coconut, Molasses Ginger Snap Gelato - do I even need to continue? Sampson also has a number of unusual flavors to peak your curiosity. Have you ever wondered what Balsamic and Black Pepper Gelato might taste like? How about Avocado Gelato?

My first foray into ice cream making was a given. I'm a cookie dough kind of girl. I was also doubly excited to test out my new KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker Attachment and also to have "permission" to make an entire bowl of cookie dough just to snack on.

First off, this book is visually pleasing. The colors used in this presentation are vibrant, vivid and psychologically pleasing. They make you want to eat ice cream. The photographs here make you wish that the ice cream could magically appear, complete and in a bowl so that you can eat it already!... As I have no knowledge on the technique of ice cream making yet, I have only ever made a few, let me say that the recipes here are delicious. I recently ate ice cream from the store, I will not say which, and was horrified at the taste. It was as if they were cutting corners and to make up for it poured a ton of salt into the mixture. With these home made recipes you get to decide what flavor balance is right for you. And with 52 easy frozen treats to treat yourselves and your relative, and neighbors (yes, them too), you will never!... buy another box from the store. I also promise, as a beginner myself, you do get the hang of making ice cream at home the more you practice. Happy practicing!!!

I love this book! It is so nice to have an ice cream book that has plenty of basic and unique flavors that's also easy to follow. Every recipe that I've made has been great! It's not just ice cream recipes either. Gelato, sorbet, and granita recipes are found throughout the book. For those who are lactose intolerant the sorbet and granita recipes are especially handy.
There are plenty of flavors that just about anyone would like using ingredients you probably have on hand. Then there are flavors that only the adventurous would dare to try, this is what I really love about this book. Flavors that are so daring they just have to be tried, like balsamic and black pepper gelato or licorice fennel ice cream! This is the first ice cream recipe book I've ever owned and honestly will ever need to own.
