1.0 out of 5 stars Not for new cooks
I bought this book at a thrift shop and was hoping I'd find some easy meals to make. This was the wrong book for that! I am not a great cook and found the recipes a little too complicated for my cooking skills. It was either that or I had no idea where to find the ingredients. This book was a let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Dairy-Free Cookbook!!!, November 21, 2003

I bought a copy of this book after reading a newspaper article on the author that also featured some of the recipes included in the book. It's a great addition to my cookbook collection. Although I don't have a problem with dairy foods, I have some friends that can't tolerate them, so I bought this book to help me create a dairy-free dinner party. It was a huge success. I found the recipes easy to prepare and my friends raved about the dishes I served. The biggest "hit" on the menu was the Coconut-Lime Seafood Stew and I had to prove that the Flourless Chocolate Almond Cake contained no dairy ingredients. I found the book to be very informative and liked the fact that I could find all the ingredients at a local grocery store. My "dairy challenged" friends all want a copy of this book, so part of my Christmas shopping is already taken care of!! Thanks Denise

5.0 out of 5 stars Recipes for Dairy-free Living, March 9, 2002

I am so excited about this new cookbook! Not only has Denise Jardine given exceptionally precise directions for ingredients and preparation, she has also introduced new cuisine in this category. Actually, even if one isn't lactose intolerant, these recipes are innovative and new! I have prepared several of the recipes and find them absolutely delicious - from a spouse who is meat and potatoes! I am offering the Peppered Pork Tenderloin with the breaded leeks to company this week-end and would not hesitate to prepare any of the recipes to guests without preparing them first to see how they taste. So far, all have been wonderful. I am amazed that anyone would consider this cookbook anything other than what it is. What it isn't is a non-fat, diet book! It never claims to be. What it is is a comprehensive and delicious assortment of easy to follow, extraordinarily tasty treats!! Come to my house and find out!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful soup recipies, April 22, 2007

I am enjoying this book very much. In Fact, so much so that I have purchased it as a gift and recommended it to my friends. Our entire family and a good part of our extended family has gone dairy-free. Some for health reasons, others because of lactose intolerance and dairy allergies. When looking through my copy, I have so many dog eared pages, it is hard to pick my favorites. I will say though, that I LOVE the soup recipes. The soups have quickly become staples in our house when I need something nourishing, creamy and easy to prepare; the carrot and roasted red pepper soup, salmon and white corn chowder, the butternut squash and pear soup are divine. The corn souffle' is fool proof; easy, impressive, and delicious. The quick breads are a snap to assemble and I make them frequently. All in all, "Recipes for Dairy-Free Living" has made a wonderful addition to my cookbook collection and I highly recommend it. My only request and question is... When is the author going to write another one? Please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, October 28, 2002

I love dairy rich foods, but unfortunately they do not love me. Being a dedicated foodie and decent cook I have had my share of challenges preparing meals and desserts without the use of dairy products. This cookbook takes the guess work out of cooking and baking dairy-free, the photographs are inviting, the instructions and ingredient lists quite clear. It is a
must have for any dairy-free kitchen.

The recipes are innovative, delicious, and quite easy to prepare using ingredients that are readily available in your local supermarket, a major plus! It offers a great variety of dishes, a little something for everyone from everyday comfort foods to elegant party menus. The author devotes an
entire section to combining the recipes into holiday menus, each with its own check off list so that you can get your timing down when entertaining.

The book is written in a friendly style, explaining the differences between lactose intolerance, dairy allergy and everything in between. It offers lots of information on food labeling, product recommendations, how to get enough calcium, a great resources section, and even a web site where you can
contact the author! I highly recommend this book, it's a tremendous value!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great dairy-free cookbook, November 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Recipes for Dairy-Free Living (Paperback)
I am enjoying this cookbook. For various health reasons, my family is trying to limit its intake of dairy products, which is tough to do. The recipes in "Dairy-Free Living" successfully substitute for dairy products, and the results are delicious. No recipe has disappointed me yet. I especially like the soups and the seafood stew. I also appreciate the entertainment/meal planning in this cookbook. I want a one-stop source for all my recipes. The meat and veggie dishes have been winners, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holiday Menu Challenges, November 14, 2003
By

This review is from: Recipes for Dairy-Free Living (Paperback)
Some dear friends from out of town are coming to our house for Thanksgiving dinner. Stan is allergic to shellfish and his wife Louise has dairy allergies. Stan will be fine; I'll be cooking a turkey. But how can I find a substitute for creamy mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie with whipped cream? Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without these traditions, so I went in search of some help at my local bookstore. I was surprised and delighted to find Denise Jardine's "Recipes for dairy free living". What a wonderful niche she has filled with this book. My goal was to create a wonderful holiday meal that accommodated dietary restrictions of my guests that was invisible to everyone. Now no one will feel left out or singled out, and I am confident about preparing and serving this menu. Denise has made the preparation a no-brainer by including a step-by-step planner. I was also delighted to discover the author has a website that provides, among other things, an opportunity to submit family recipes for dairy free transformation. BRAVO!

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes the scary seem simple, August 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Recipes for Dairy-Free Living (Paperback)
For those who have to give up dairy for health reasons, this is a great book. Denise makes accessible, easy-to-understand substitutions that don't involve specialty stores. It is basically a Kosher cookbook, minus a few seafood items, with meat and other non-began options. Which is exactly what it is promised to be. This is not for the hardcore fringe, but for mainstream eaters and cooks who need or want to reduce dairy but don't know where to begin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad to learn the facts on Diary Allergies, October 28, 2002
By

I would like to acknowledge Denise Jardine for her precise information about being allergic to dairy products and what to look for when reading ingredient labels. It is amazing how many store products have diary additives; all the way from vegetable and meat entrees to mayonaise and pancake mixes. My fiance no longer has digestive problems and inpart just purchasing a loaf of bread that is dairy free was a big help. Her recipes are easy to follow and I taste great. Denise brings old recipes [with wonderful flavors] to the table with new ingredients. Thank you Denise!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic fool-proof dairy-free recipes, October 21, 2007
This review is from: Recipes for Dairy-Free Living (Paperback)
I love this cookbook. The author has created fabulous foolproof dairy-free recipes that I turn to over and over again. I especially love the butternut squash and pear soup recipe which is sublime, but there are many many more wonderful recipes. Having this cookbook has made it so that I don't mind being lactose-intolerant as much! The only downside to the cookbook is that many of the dessert recipes have tree-nuts, but I am allergic to tree-nuts unfortunately! Still, if you are lactose-intolerant or cook for someone who is, I highly recommend this cookbook.
