Good for modern-style homes, just okay for others,
By A Customer
This review is from: Recipes and Ideas: Lighting: Simple Solutions for the Home (Recipes & Ideas) (Paperback)
This book had a good overview of lighting techniques and ideas; however, all the examples and photos were of homes decorated in a very modern style, not applicable to most people. The same principles employed in Craftsman, western, or other home styles would have been useful.

The book is great, very good script, pictures and general ideas, explaining thoroughly the concept of how lighting in a room works: using general, task and feature lighting effectively. It lacks though exact measurements for placing lights at certain distances from walls, only mentioning, for example, that distance from wall depends on height of ceiling.Summary: good one to have.

I bought this book just before moving to my first owned little apartment. This is a beautiful book with many practical solutions for lighting. Well illustrated pictures with great ideas. I've applied some of the ideas to my small apartment. Besides, the beautiful pictures also provide me with some wonderful ideas for interior design. It has only 104 pages, hope there were more pages.

This review is from: Recipes and Ideas: Lighting: Simple Solutions for the Home (Recipes & Ideas) (Paperback)
This book is a quick read and packed with creative ideas for the homeowner and interior design students. It is not an indepth study of lighting but more of a useful handbook. The organization of the information by room brings the reader right to the point without a lot of information clutter.I would also recommend this book to computer graphic artists who want the basics of residential lighting for their projects. - jim

It's more detailed and comprehensive than other lighting design books I've picked up. The book covers a range of topics that you can't find answers from online. Including my favorite, when and where should you use frosted bulbs and where you should definitely use clear. If you google that question, you'll get a variety of answers, even people claiming to be experts because they are electricians. My husband is a master electrician, and I can promise you, lighting design instruction is skimmed over in their educations. Their education is focused on the mathematical/engineering aspect of lighting, which does cover lighting design, but it doesn't really go into the deeper tricks of making a house warm and your guests look attractive. So, as we're pouring thousands into lighting in our house, I feel a responsibility to make it a wrinkle-free, skinny, environment, while he's trying to make it as white and bright as possible. That's why I picked up this book. It's difficult to find real comprehensive lighting design information online, other than very basic ideas, which are more common sense than anything. Like, using low sconces around mirrors to illuminate faces and not cast shadows, exaggerate wrinkles, etc. I really want to know what type of bulb, lamp, placement, luminous intensity, and manufacturer is being used in the dressing rooms of certain stores that make you look so awesome in their clothes. This book addresses some of these concepts and it also gives a fantastic reference in the back, so you can go to the websites of some legitimate lighting design companies and manufacturers and get more information. So, overall, I'm really happy with my purchase. For the price, it was worth it, and I did learn a bit. It's not a text book, but it's detailed for its size. Also, pictures are wonderful, they include traditional, contemporary, and transitional homes.
