5.0 out of 5 stars a gem
This is a great book to help you build variety into your diet after weight loss surgery. For a while after weight loss surgery it seems that you are condemned to a life of bland food with no texture and this book effectively dispels that myth and provides you with great, tasty options.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough protein!!
Post-surgical patients (both gastric bypass and band) are supposed to eat at least 60g of protein every day. So why are many of these recipes so skimpy on the protein? I expected more useable fare from a book that touts itself as "nourishing the new you". As it stands, I will only use maybe a quarter of the recipes in this book -- very disappointing. 2.0 out of 5 stars Where is the protein?, September 22, 2007
This review is from: Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks) (Paperback)
It should have tipped me off when the picture on the front of the book was toast with berries. Many of these dishes might be okay for well after surgery, but there was nothing that worked well for the weeks after. Overall, the recipes were too high in carbohydrates, and just didn't have enough protein. There are other cookbooks better designed for the specific needs that go along with this surgery.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice for WLS patients, despite its title, March 18, 2010
This review is from: Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks) (Paperback)
As another reviewer said, I should have been tipped off by the photo of toast with berries on the cover. Where's the protein in that?

Everyone with whom I have entrusted my care during my banding journey -- from the nurses to the doctors to the nutritionists to even the psychologists -- emphasizes the importance of protein. It was drilled into me that 65 grams of protein are a daily requirement, and foods I'd long seen as "good foods," particularly fruits and vegetables, would now need to take a more ancillary position to protein on my plate.

Imagine my surprise when I see a full chapter devoted to salads. Dr. Duc C. Vuong, in his outstanding book ULTIMATE LAP-BAND SUCCESS, writes: "Everyone thinks that salad is a healthy choice, but as a bandster, it is very important that you unlearn this. Salad is not a band-friendly choice." He lists several reasons why, but primarily because the protein content is insufficient.

I'm also shocked to find soups (a big band "no-no"), as well as plenty of muffins, wraps, sandwiches and other carb-heavy options that my doctors stressed I should avoid. There are recipes in here with fewer than 3 grams of protein per serving. That means I'm trying to pack the remaining 62 grams of protein into two meals, and considering how little I can physically consume, that's almost impossible.

The recipes in the book do look tasty and are probably good options for non-WLS patients, but many of the recipes here fly in the face of everything most WLS patients are taught.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book, June 10, 2007
This review is from: Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks) (Paperback)
The recipes are great, with great photos, also not just standard fare, but some items I wouldn't have thought of. The Pita Pizza is really yummy. The information was great too, I like that it tells you at what stage you can eat which recipes. I found it gave me good things to look forward to. Loved this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and motivational tool, July 5, 2007
This review is from: Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks) (Paperback)
The number of people who have undergone bariatric surgery is growing. Now this group has an excellent resource to help them overcome the monotony of post-op meal plans by adding variety and flavor to foods without causing discomfort after eating. The recipes stand out for their emphaisis on ethnic cuisines, attractive photographs and useful nutrition information, especially in the author's notes on selected recipes. I'd also recommend this book to those considering gastric bypass surgery. The recipes encourage the home chef to address basic challenges such as modifying fats and controlling portions, all needed skills for making lasting lifestyle change.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Ever!, June 15, 2007
This review is from: Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks) (Paperback)
I have been a nurse for over 30+ years and have come in contact with several weight-loss surgical patients. Probably the most asked question is "what can I eat?" For years, people have had to depend on their doctor and/or dietician to guide them back into an eating regime. This book if for every weight-loss surgical patient and I also believe it to be for anyone looking to follow a low calorie, low fat diet. The written information is all inclusive and the pictures are mouth watering.
I will be recommending this book to all the patients that I come across that will benefit from this knowledge and presentation. It's like having your own personal dietician and culinary expert right in your kitchen. Now if a cook just came with it.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks, April 25, 2007

A weight loss surgery cookbook of this caliber (and written by a Registered Dietitian with extensive experience in bariatric surgery)is long overdue! It's great for people who are looking for more variety with their meals. I have purchased three books so far for myself and others. What a great idea for a gift or a raffle! There are too many great recipes to mention but one favorite is the Pork Tenderloin Medallions with Spanish Smoked Paprika. Almost all of the recipes have a photo (of framing quality) which enhances this book immensely. A big "hats off" to Ms. Furtado and Ms. Schultz for a super job!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than a Cookbook, March 1, 2007
This review is from: Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks) (Paperback)
I received this book prior to my surgery from my SO ; so my first thank you goes to him for his support in an unfamiliar adventure. The book is a wealth of information on lap band surgery and nutrition. It is full of hints and useful information to help you from preparing you for surgery and your first days post op. This book is well put together and the pictures are beautiful. The recipes are appealing and well thought out for each phase after your band.
This book is easy to follow and bears rereading again and again. I am so glad I have it in my kitchen

Margaret Furtado and Lynette Schultz have published a superb cookbook filled with hundreds of delicious low calorie recipes that I will recommend to my bariatric surgery patients as well as anyone else interested in preparing tasty, highly nutritious dishes. Each recipe has a detailed nutritional analysis, a perfect addition for those individuals on special diets. Accompanying the recipes are glossy photos that are simply visually magnificent to behold. This book is a welcome addition to anyone's healthy cookbook collection. Highly recommended.
