Needs editing and updating, December 30, 2005

I ordered this booklet despite the review above (which was very helpful, and is right on the money), because there didn't seem to be any other books offering what I wanted (recipes for homemade cosmetic products, mostly from easy-to-acquire and natural ingredients).
The spelling is just atrocious - and repeatedly so, that's how we know it's spelling and not typos (how in the world can a book about cosmetics continuously misspell "mortar and pestle" as "mortar and pistil" - a flower part! And supposedly there is an editor - I certainly hope she was a friend doing a favor, not a "professional" editor!).
Turns out I did find a MUCH better professional book: Creative Face: Make your own makeup by Maxine Nelson. Excellent, no misspellings, gorgeous pictures, and much easier recipes made from much simpler ingredients, with more information about why the ingredients are needed and what can and cannot be substituted.
Sorry, Karen Bombeli - you really ought to fix your book!

Getting there but not nearly complete, December 8, 2005

Once I got over the atrocious spelling and grammatical mistakes scattered throughout this book (surprising considering it's a 3rd Edition), I was able to glean SOME handy hints from the information contained in it.
Unfortunately, I really felt that there was much missing from the book. More helpful hints were needed, more information in the equipment section (eg. basics, then an optional for those who want to do a more professional job of preparing makeup), more on which ingredients did what, rather than a just the very brief glossary at the back.
As there is currently a very limitied range of books dealing with actual cosmetics (not skincare) making, I wanted a book filled with handy information rather than just recipes. Background information is vital to both the beginner (myself)and the more experienced cosmetics maker. I didn't get what I wanted with this book.
The tips at the back dealt with the application of makup rather than anything to do with it's manufacture, which frustrated me as there are plenty of books dealing with this subject already.
I'd love to see a table of ingredients and what can be substituted for what (i.e. a vegan ingredient instead of beeswax)tips on which are the best emulsifiers, thickeners, etc. for the different types of makeup products.
So much was missing from the book, so I'll have to keep looking for that really helpful, information packed collection of practical experience that I'm looking for in a cosmetics making book and relegate this one to the occasional reference file.

This book should be a freebie that Somerset Cosmetic Company gives out because that is one of the only places that you can buy the ingredients to make these products. Yes, Virginia it is entirely possible to spend more money making your products than purchasing them at Sephora.
