Night Kitchen Soups,
By Jana (PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Recipes from the Night Kitchen: A Practical Guide to Spectacular Soups, Stews, and Chilies (Paperback)
One of my absolute favorite cookbooks that I picked up years ago on a clearance bin and until ... could not find again. Plan on buying several copies as gifts as every recipe I have made has been terrific, especially the vegetable ones like the Butternut Squash, Ginger Carrot or Asparagus Taragon. Just made the Mullagatawny with chicken tonight - yum! Recipes handle improvisation really well and they all have a lot of flavor.

Always good results,

I first came across this cookbook in a reader's preview version, typos and all. It went on to become my very favorite soup book. The recipes are straight-forward but yield delicious soups with assertive flavors. I don't think I have ever made a bad recipe from this book! Especially good is Spicy Black Bean Soup and Chicken Rosemary Soup. Also the White Gazpacho is different and wonderfully cool for the summer. Give it a try!

I love this book! I've used so many of the different recipes from warm creamy soups in the winter to cold fruit soups in the summer. I love how practical the book is with it's ingredient list and how easy the soups are to make. Each recipe give suggestions for varying it slightly according to your tastes.

This is one of the few cook books that answers all questions you have and whose recipies don't require any adjustment. A wonderful addition to the cookbook shelf.

This book was published in 1990 and it had already ended up in a discounted book store when I found it. Now, just 1 year shy of 20 years of owning it, I've gone through 4 copies and ordered at least 20 total (thanks, amazon!) to gift to friends and family!!! Hands down, this is the BEST soup book that I've ever owned. Why? No nonsense recipes, easy and affordable ingredients, GREAT pantry list to help you get started...and the recipes are stunning. Whether it's the Four Pepper Soup, the Goat Cheese/Tomato, or the Black Bean Soup, I've made almost every single soup in her book. As I said, I've gone through 4 of them, wearing the binding out and wearing it thin: I now have 100% of the recipes stored on-line so I can print them out when needed. If I could ONLY have one single soup cookbook, this would be the one that I'd have to have in my library. It deserved a much bigger audience than it got! Thanks, Sally!!!

I've tried a few soups from this book so far, and had excellent results. The cream of mushroom, in particular, is wonderful. Very clear and easy-to-follow recipes, as well as explanations of ingredients. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves soup as much as I.

Best chili ever,

The Spicy Sausage Chili recipe alone was worth the price of the book. My husband and I love chili and this was delicious. It's also great to have a cookbook that contains everyday ingredients. Nothing more frustrating than finding what looks like a great recipe only to discover that it includes items so exotic that you have to go to a specialty store to find them!

best soup book,
This review is from: Recipes from the Night Kitchen: A Practical Guide to Spectacular Soups, Stews, and Chilies (Paperback)
I have used this book for 15 years in every kitchen I have worked and it has never failed me. The recipes are direct, easy to execute, and can be multiplied for large amounts. I will recommend this to anyone and have loaned it out often.

Terrific cookbook for soup!,

Although I have several soup cookbooks, this is the book I go to first for good directions, simple ingredients, and great taste. I've made several recipes in this book and plan to try more if soup weather will just get here. The Butternut Squash soup is my favorite; I keep thinking I should try another butternut squash soup recipe sometime, but why, when this recipe is so wonderful just as it is. I love the Split Pea with Smoked Turkey and Cream and the Ham and Black Bean. Most recently I tried the Red Gazpacho and loved it - so easy too. Looking at the contents: Vegetable Soups, Bean Soups, Chicken Soups, Fish Soups, Chili, Stews, Chilled Soups, and information on equipment, ingredients, herbs/spices, and stocks/broths. A lot of good recipes and information in a small book!

I haven't used the book yet, but the recipes look great and there are a lot of soup-making tips I had not thought of. I look forward to trying these techniques and making several of these soups.
