Introduction
As I sit here on the porch writing, I am watching Anna, my six year old, playing with the chickens and turkeys, while several of my other kids are picking salad greens from the garden for tonight's supper. How do I find myself in this blissful life after growing up with career minded parents preparing me for a life as an attorney and who did not even like to cook, much less garden?  My husband, Scott, has always been a "Daniel Boone" of sorts.  His life begins and ends with the outdoors, and he is a very self sufficient type of guy.  I, on the other hand, was more of a city girl that happened to fall "head over heels" for this "land and animal loving" outdoorsman.  We married during my last semester in law school, and thankfully, my life changed directions forever!  Our first of 7 children arrived soon after our first anniversary.  Never before had I wanted optimal health for myself and my family.  We were already eating wild-game, but I began to see the necessity for other healthy sustainable foods even more now that we had a baby to care for.  I began to enjoy this natural and self sufficient lifestyle more and more.  It is very empowering to know that I could sustain my own life with the knowledge I have gained through the years.  I have learned to shoot a gun, till the land, grow the perfect heirloom beef steak tomato, raise baby chicks, nurture bees, preserve all that I harvest, forage wild mushrooms, and cook the freshest, most succulent dishes known to man...at least my husband.  I am continuing to learn to live the self sustainable life and it continues to transform my life and fill me with REAL, useful, life giving information that liberates my soul.  The dirt, animals, sun, and rain have become my friends.

Historically, just about every home had a kitchen garden and a few chickens in the back yard, if not out of necessity, merely for the pleasure of raising nutritious food for their families. As our lives have gotten busier and space increasingly sparse, people have relied on supermarkets for their food source.  Supermarket produce and meat are subpar to the simply grown vegetables, eggs, and meat of the backyard garden.  Besides most of the supermarket fruits and vegetables being genetically modified and sprayed with pesticides, they have also lost much of their nutritional value and taste once they reach the supermarket shelves.  Additionally, most of the supermarket proteins are full of antibiotics and hormones leaving wild game and fish as my obvious preference of protein.  The diet of wild game is perfectly natural and perfect for our bodies just as God planned it. Not only are naturally harvested crops and game healthier, their taste is far more superior than their supermarket counterparts.   Fresh, unaltered fruits, vegetables, home grown chickens, eggs, and game meat are truly the only choice for my family.  The small effort that you can invest in raising and harvesting your own food far outweigh any sacrifices of time or energy that it may require.  Really, it is no sacrifice at all considering the enjoyment of being so closely connected to nature.

Scott and I have taught our children to truly enjoy all kinds of foods, especially those that are perfectly fresh from the garden, woods, or water.  They all take part in the entire process of harvesting food for the table whether it be planning the garden, saving seeds, fishing, or bringing in vegetables and herbs from the garden.  When kids are take part in their own sustenance, they want the pleasure of enjoying it to the fullest with great recipes.  They are competent in the lost art of harvesting and preserving their own foods and are able to make wise choices as to their food sources.  Our family's greatest memories are always centered around food.  I was blessed to have a grandmother that passed her traditional Southern preparation of food down to me.  Many have the blessings of cherishing not only the recipes that have been passed down to them, but the heirloom seeds that have been saved from year to year from their grandparent's favorite plants.  How awesome would that be?  What a legacy!  We have not had to force our children to work with us in planting and harvesting the garden.  Quite the opposite.  They feel that they are missing out on the fun if the are not with us.  I am still, like a fascinated child, in awe each time that I plant a seed and see it grow from a seedling to a full grown plant producing sustenance for my family.

The self-sustainable lifestyle is one that contributes to superior food and health, extraordinary competence, responsibility, and financial stability as well as gives us a connection with our ancestors, families, and the land.  I am a believer that home should be a place of industry, adventure, and rejuvenation to be of better service to others.  What better way to fulfill this purpose than to be self sufficient and share the abundance with those around me?  The satisfaction of tilling the ground, planting a seed, watching it grow and produce flavor and health giving food is one of the most treasured blessings in life that I want to pass down for generations to come.  Using God's natural resources that He so bountifully supplies is a privilege and honor that inspires me to be a "keeper" of the land.  My hope for you is to start with the basics of at least cooking with fresh vegetables and free range animals, or for those who are seasoned gardeners to continue on your journey to health and self sustainability with the sustainable recipes and information in this book. May you be blessed as you get back to the basics and enjoy your journey to the self sustainable life.

Biography
Stacy Harris is pioneering the farm-to-fork eating movement that includes harvesting wild animals, in addition to domesticated animals, and homegrown fruits and vegetables. Putting aside her career as a lawyer, Stacy now lives the dream of maintaining a healthy, sustainable, back-to-the-basics lifestyle with her husband and seven children on their homestead. Her passion for harvesting and eating from the wild began 20 years ago when she married an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Both being from Montgomery, Alabama, they together decided to take advantage of the natural resources that surrounded them. 


Stacy Harris is the author of 3 cookbooks: Recipes and Tips for Sustainable Living, Tracking the Outdoors, and Wildgame: Food for your Family, and as well as a DVD, Gourmet Venison with Stacy Harris and a blog, Game and Garden (gameandgarden.com). My name is Stacy Harris. I am happily married to the man of my dreams, raise and home educate my seven children, cook incessantly, do mounds of laundry, garden, forage, fish, and spend hours on various homesteading projects. I spend my days teaching my children how to live off the land as much as possible. At most anytime I can be found building a chicken tractor, earthen oven, smokehouse, planting a garden, fishing, bee-keeping, hunting, foraging, or preserving food. I consider myself a back-to-basics kind of gal and have made it my priority and ambition to stay away from the supermarket!

My self-sustainable back-to-basics life began the day I married my husband, Scott. Scott is an avid outdoorsman who lived to hunt and fish. He brought home "the fruit of his labor" dubbing it as "the best meat known to man." At first I didn't care for the taste of wild game and found that fish could be bland and tasteless. That inspired me to find new ways to prepare wild game and fish so our meals would be pleasing to him and to me. Although I went through many trials and tribulations in the process of developing recipes, I got pretty darn good at it and actually learned to LOVE it!

I love fine food and wanted to create really exceptional, nutritious, natural recipes for the wild game and fish Scott brought home to serve to our family. I poured over ancient recipes and developed the ability to make the most succulent tender meat out of even inferior cuts of wild game. It surely was challenging, but after spending countless hours learning new techniques and inventing delicious recipes for these wild foods, I felt compelled to share my knowledge and hard earned expertise with others.

I thought, "Why stop with the protein that we eat." I planted a garden of heirloom vegetables sprinkled with flowers and voila; my adventure of eating off the land began. My children are involved in every area of this "living off the land" process right along side of us.

I believe one of the finest privileges in life is the privilege to learn! I am constantly learning new ways to prepare, preserve, and expand my culinary knowledge and self-sufficiency. As I learn, I love passing on lessons to others, either through my books, blog, or sharing it on the radio airwaves or television.

My sincere goal is to inspire and teach people of every age to live abundant, joyful, healthy lives and to do it with style and beauty, and "good taste". The first step is taking back control of our food resources. My hope is to inspire others in some way to begin to grow and harvest their own food and to continually take steps forward toward individual freedom, self-sustainability, and optimal health, while eating the best prepared foods on the planet.

I further hope that people will step back from the super-market aisles and step up and into their local farmer's markets and utilize the unlimited bounty found right in their own backyards, woods, and waters for the freshest most organic back-to-basic foods.

My work has been published regularly in Mossy Oak Game Keepers Magazine, Buckmasters Magazine, and Living Ready Magazine as well as many other publications. I have been a featured guest on national television shows including The Jackie Bushman Show, Deer and Deer Hunting, Destination Whitetail, and I have appeared several times on the nationally syndicated Rick and Bubba Show as well as newscasts and many local television shows. I regularly speak about sustainable living, with a concentration on healthy, delicious eating from the wild, and growing and eating from heirloom plants.

If you like to eat you must get this book. Everything in it is pretty much what we eat anyway just tips and recipes that are so much better than just about any other cookbook that I have. I eat mostly a Paleo diet but most of the recipes in Stacy's book fit right in. We don't get to eat wild game much but using these recipes make plain old beef and chicken much better.

My daughter who is a very picky eater has claimed this book and plans to take it off to college when she goes. I either have to hide it or buy one for her. Thanks Stacy for an awesome cookbook.

As you leaf through the book, the first thing you'll notice is that it is lavishly illustrated. Eye-popping color photos adorn almost every single page. Given that the focus here is on cooking mouth-watering meals, that stands to reason. Fair warning -- do not read this book on an empty stomach!

The book is divided into three main sections -- Garden, Beyond the Garden, and Woods and Water. In the first section, Ms. Harris talks about Heirloom Gardening, Vertical and Container Gardening, Herbs, and Preserving. In each of these subsections, she has several recipes utilizing what has been grown in the gardens. These recipes, such as Corn Chowder, Herb Frittata, and Granny's Garden Vegetable Soup, are laid out in easy to follow fashion. Nothing too fancy or beyond the capabilities of the average cook.

In Beyond the Garden, Ms. Harris goes through foraging for wild foods, beekeeping, and raising poultry. Again, several recipes accompany these sections. Wild Blueberry Pie, Baked Peaches with Honey and Almonds, Rooster and Dumplings, even Southern Style Eggs Benedict.

Moving to Woods and Water, she has a lengthy section on venison, as well as wild turkey, duck, quail, small game, and seafood and fish. The recipes included here are enough to make you want to hit the trail today to bring home squirrel or rabbit just so you can try them out!

Throughout the book, Ms. Harris includes great practical information gleaned from her years of experience. Make no mistake, this is a woman who didn't need to do much of any library research and instead relied upon just sharing what she's learned by doing. It is readily apparent throughout that she has been there, done that. From de-boning a quail to trussing a venison loin, nothing is left to guesswork.

I've never left a book review on Amazon, until reading Recipes and Tips for Sustainable Living with Stacy Harris.

My first impressions of Stacy’s new book were - high quality, glossy pages with excellent photos of food, recipes, family, and sustainable practices for self-sufficient living. It’s good that the pages are high gloss since I began drooling by just looking at the food photos and recipes.

Stacy’s passion for growing heirloom plants and animals that are natural, pesticide, hormone, genetically modified free is clear. And she’s able to cook for a family of 9 from her heirloom garden, pastured animals, and wild game. Very inspiring!

The tips for sustainable living are mixed in throughout the book. One of my favorites is on page 88 – The Perfect Boiled Egg.

There’s also tips on foraging wild foods, beekeeping, seed saving, and other self-reliant skills. The tips aren’t going to teach you everything you need to know about sustainable living, but they will motivate you on your journey.

Being an avid hunter and fisherman myself, I loved the ‘Woods and Water’ section of Stacy’s book! I’m always happy to try new recipes for venison, wild turkey, duck, quail, small game, and seafood and fish. Even if you don’t harvest wild fish and game, she provides a substitution page to incorporate domesticated animals for recipes to please everyone.

Reading Stacy’s story and new cookbook will inspire you to take your next step towards personal freedom and sustainable living. All while eating the best prepared foods on the planet!

You'll find lots of easy recipes even picky eaters will like. Whether you live in a spacious homestead or a small apartment, you will find this book offers something for everyone.

I've always struggled with ways to prepare my wild game. Stacy does an amazing job of helping your average cook (like myself)cook fantastic meals using wild hunted or gathered ingredients. I want to know where my food comes from but I also want it to taste good! This book is the perfect combination and a very realistic approach to incorporating wild game meals into my diet. Thanks, Stacy, for not only great home cooked recipes but a very entertaining read as well. Looking forward to future projects! Oh, and I check out your blog - LOVE IT!

Stacy Harris hit it out of the ball park with this book. Whether you grow your own vegetables and fruit, or hunt and fish, or just go to the local farmer's market, you will get use out of this book. Not only is it full of delicious recipes with full color photos, it also has preparation tips, growing tips and even tips on beekeeping and raising your own chickens!

This is the best cookbook i have ever come across.Stacy puts photos with her recipes that are so colorful it makes you want to eat it right off the page.Then when you make one of her recipes the taste will rock your world.you cant wait to try the next one. I gave her 5 stars for a reason,her recipes are the best.
